Bald
Eagle
This magnificent Bald Eagle with
white head and tail were once seriously declined its number due to human
encroachment, pesticides and hunting by the middle of 1900s. The
successful recovery program now stabilized its number, particularly in the
western states and provinces. Some birds became permanent residents in the
West Coast of BC, but many northern races return to the rivers of the
Lower Mainland in winter for the spawned out salmon. They largely prey on
fish and fresh carrion, but sometimes they prey on small animals when
available. They make a nest on trees using twigs, repairing and renovating
it year after year. The largest nest ever recorded was a 4 meters tall.
