this is how i would explain magic in my world of fiction.

Magic: an all pervasive force that resides within all nature (alive and
inanimate, although inanimate is a bad way to descirbe...well, more on that
another time.

Ok, so theoretically all people can use this force...however some people are
born more finely in tune with energy, they resonate with it.

So, although most would believe magic to break the laws of nature, i must
prostest this idea almost completely false (breaking the law, of course can
be done, but the cost of such an act...well, its the last spell a person will cast.

That said, u must imagine the laws of nature as not immutable, not as a
rigid form, but as a living presence itself, a presence that can change.
Think of nature as elastic. Magic provides a means to bend, twist, warp,
and temporarlily reshape natural law; however, once the spell has
closed, nature snaps back into place.

The act of snapping back like a rubber band generates an energy called the spell
backlash. The backlash of the spell always rebounds on the caster or
is displaced to the sacrifice. Most spells cast only slightly warp nature
and so the backlash is hardly noticable especially for accomplished
spellcasters.

Manipulating magic involves both drawing out the power created by the body, and
drawing magic in from the surroundings. Magic drawn in from the
surroundings has to be reworked within so that it resonates with the magic users
own unique energy signature.

There generally exists two ways into which to use magic: combat and finesse.
Combat magic involves forcefully jamming one's power into the world to
manipulate an element. This power is quick, destructive, and may quickly
exhaust the user. However, sometimes, u just have to fight. It does not
heavily depend on spells, but on the mind, spirit, and body; become an elemental
force.

The second type delves deeper into spell casting and consequently requires more
time to execute. In this form, the caster uses a mixture of words and
motions to weave their power into the environment (less backlash
results). This gives better control and concentration of power and actually is
where the higher form of magic resides. Become one with the force.

The highest magic recieves division into the five elemental seals. They have
duality but represent a singleness:

Water/Ice

Fire/Magma

Earth/Plant

Wind/Lightning

Light/Shadow

Other magical energies include Psychic, Illusion, Luck, and a few others. These
are not considered elemental, and constitute a second tier of
magic.

U can learn any type of magic since they are essentially different
manifestations of the same Oneness; however, the majority of people find they
have innate appitudes for a certain element, and choose to solely delve
deep into those arts.

So, just to clear a few things up, there are things magic can and can not do.
It can not revive the dead, it can summon only nature spirits (more on
this in another post), it must obey the conservations of energy and
matter, does not allow for physical time travel (although astral time-travel is
permitted. Time travel into the past is safer than the future because
the future is constantly shifting one doesn't know what version of
the future one will enter; so predicting the future is rendered futile.)

Wow, that was extremely fun, i hope u enjoyed taking a tour through what
occupies my thoughts when i get tired of "the real world". Call me a freak, a
child, a nut-case, what you will, but the act of creating a world...its
indescribable....more to come, don't want to scare everyone away
on the first visit...so please come again =^.^=
