Siderfin one Name Study - This Siderfin file (*.pdf format) lists the first nine generations of the descendants of John Siderfin and his wife Christian who would have married around 1500 to 1510 and probably at Luxborough, Somerset. The earlier material is from a book that was written by James Hooper Saunders in 1910. I have acquired some of the original material he mentions in his book and will gradually put up the various wills as I transcribe them. Recent evidence has brought up the question of which Robert Siderfin was the father of my 3x great grandmother Elizabeth Siderfin and a detailed analysis of the evidence has led to my challenging the genealogy chart in James Saunders book. I have now placed Elizabeth as the grandaughter of Augustine Siderfin rather than the daughter of his brother Robert who would have been over 60 when he married a woman in her early 20s - not impossible but all the evidence clearly points to her being the grandaughter of Augustine. Six years into genealogy has now permitted me to more clearly evaluate the evidence and counter this published genealogy.

BLAKE

My BLAKE family lived within 2 miles of Andover Hampshire (late 1400s on). The will of the wife of Richard BLAKE states that her father was Robert BLAKE. The widow Jone BLAKE's (g grandmother of Richard BLAKE) will at Knights Enham in 1527 lists children: Robert, Nicholas, Elizabeth (BLAKE) MYLNE. The will of Nic[h]olas Blake (d 1547 at Enham) lists wife Margaret, sons William (eldest), Edmund and daughters Elizabeth, Alice. Parish registers for Knights-Enham. Charles BLAKE (m Mary PRINCE) and my ancestor Thomas are mentioned in the will of John BLAKE (d 1796) , Malster at Abbotts Ann.

BLAKE DNA

Family Studies for BLAKE DNA (y chromosome DNA) and anyone with the surname BLAKE is welcomed to join. The DNA for my family line can be found at Ysearch 36Q9Z. The BLAKE DNA group at FT DNA is already set up.

The other member of the Family DNA studies is descended from the Blake family in Ireland - email Bill Bleak.

If anyone has any queries please email Elizabeth Kipp . DNA has certainly given a different way of looking at our genealogical results. The results below are for several different BLAKE family lines that have been extracted from various websites and they include haplogroups: I2a, I1, R1b, C3 and J2. It will be interesting to see if we are able to find the location for the founding lines of the BLAKE family.

BEAGUE

The BEAGUE family name is found principally in the Selworthy, Somerset parish registers beginning in the 1620s. On the International Genealogical Index (www.familysearch.org) There are 53 members of this family (verious spellings) with twenty two members of this family in Somerset and mostly at Selworthy (in England). The priest made a notation in the Parish Register for Selworthy at the death of John BEAGUE 25 May 1790 that he was the last of his line. John BEAGUE lived at Skilgate and was 76 years old when he died.

BEARD

I found this BEARD family line on Genes Reunited when one of my 2x great grandfather's sister's names appeared in another family tree. I wrote to the individual with the entry and he wrote back giving me the name of my 3x great grandfather's wife and a copy of one page of Henry's will. I found the will online at The National Archives and downloaded it the same day. Although it has stretched my line back another two generations and given me my 3x great grandmother's full name, this family line is very much of a mystery. Henry married Elizabeth HEMSLEY at St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, Surrey 31 Mar 1766. Although his will states that his daughter Mary is married to Christy BULLER that marriage couldn't be found in the records for the St Mary Magdalen Parish at Bermondsey, Surrey. The will had been a little confusing as it referred to Henry's wife as Jane but a search of the Surrey Marriage index at Salt Lake City had revealed two marriages for Henry BEARD with the second one being Jane. Mary had two sisters mentioned in the will Sarah and Elizabeth (neither were married in 1796).

BEVER

The BEVER family lived at Upper Clatford. Anthony Bever married Susanna Johnson 20 Jul 1710 at Upper Clatford and they had three children. Dinah was the eldest, Susanna (b c 1714 - d 1764) did not marry and the only son Thomas died at 15 years of age. This family disappears at Upper Clatford with the death of Thomas and there was only this one family by that name in the parish.

BLACKMOORE

The Protestation Returns (1641-2) for Bishops Nympton lists several members of the BLACKMOORE family: Anthony, Edward, Hugh, John, John, Thomas and Walter. Thomas, Edward and Anthony are brothers (birth order). Hugh, Walter and John are the sons of Thomas. John is the son of Edward. The first register (begins in 1556) has the following signatures: John Southcombe, Thomas Leigh, Thomas Baker, John Jewell, Lewes Blackmoore, Joane Baker. The Subsidy for Bishops Nympton of 1545 lists: Thomas Blakemore, Robert Blakemore, John Blakemore, John Blakemore senior and Joan Blakemore. The subsidy for Bishops Nympton of 1581 lists Thomas Blackemore and Joan Blackmore widow. The will for Thomas Blackmoore (b 12 Sep 1591) and probated 1648 lists his daughters Johane and Margaret and his sons Hugh and Walter from his marriage to Marie Saunders and daughters Agnes and Julian and sons Edward, Thomas and Anthony from his marriage to his second wife Johane. His executors were his kinsmen and good friends: John Towte, John Pincombe, David Gill and William Pincombe the younger. I found the relationship mentioned and it is through the Snow family. William Pincombe (b c 1530 North Molton) married Emotte Snow (c 1654 North Molton) and Emotte's brother William was the father of Honor Snow who married Thomas Blackmoore 8 Oct 1570 at Bishops Nympton. That means that the Pincombe members (John and William) that Thomas Blackmoore (grandson of Thomas who married Honor Snow) mentioned in his will are his third cousins. John Towte and David Gill were his good friends because neither were directly related to the Blackmoore family.

BULLER

Christopher BULLER married to Mary Beard by 1796. Mary Beard's father was Henry Beard and his will of 1796 stated that his daughter Mary Beard was married to Christy Buller. Their first child Elizabeth Jane was baptized at St Mary Magdalen in 1796 (died by 1799) (all seven children baptized here)). Their second child Martha Sarah BULLER was born in 1797, a second Elizabeth Jane BULLER was baptized in 1799 and Emma Hemsley BULLER was baptized in 1800. A fifth child died shortly after birth in 1803/4 - Henry Christy BULLER. The sixth child was my great great grandfather Henry Christopher BULLER born 1805. The seventh child was Robert Huxley (likely Hemsley) BULLER born 1806. The marriage registration for Henry Christopher BULLER and Ann WELCH says that Henry was a widower. I have not yet found his first marriage and I do not know if he had any children by this first marriage. They never appear with him on the census if he did. My maternal grandmother was a BULLER.

Martha Sarah BULLER married George CASWELL 29 October 1831 and they had three sons: Clement James, Charles and Henry John. Elizabeth Jane BULLER married Edward CHURCHYARD 31 October 1827 and they had two children: Edward and Elizabeth Jane. Emma Hemsley BULLER married Isaac DEBNAM in 1827 at Holymount Independent, Shoreditch, London and 2 January 1840 (second time) and and they had two children: Elizabeth Sarah and Isaac. Henry Christopher BULLER married Ann WELCH 23 Aug 1838 at Edgbaston Warwick England (he is listed as a widower) and they had 11 children including my ancestor Edwin Denner BULLER.

BUTT

The BUTT family lived in Dorset in the Winterborne villages just outside of Blandford Forum. My father's father's mother's mother was Louisa BUTT (my 2x great grandmother). Charles Louisa's father lived to be 86 years old. The road from Salisbury through the Wallops to Upper Clatford is a very pleasant drive.

CHARLEY

The CHARLEY family has been a brick wall for me and I have heard of the Charley family since I was a child. My mother knew her ancestry back to John PINCOMBE and Grace MANNING who were the parents of John PINCOMBE who married Mary CHARLIE (sp). I think perhaps my mother remembered Grace MANNING so well because Grace had the same name as my mother's paternal grandmother who had died 30 years before my mother was born. She was always curious about Grace GRAY and she too had seen the picture of Grace that I had seen. My mother looked like Grace GRAY and she also looked very like the picture of Elizabeth Mary Ann PINCOMBE (my grandfather's younger sister who died when she was only 13 years old). This CHARLEY family is found principally at Kentisbury Devon but in the 1700s they can also be found at Coombe Martin, Trentishoe and as far away as Landkey. Looking at the Subsidy Rolls for Devon in the 1540s there are nine CHORLEY names listed in the Tiverton and Bampton Hundreds and the name is spelled CHURLEY in the next set of Subsidy Rolls in the 1580s. This family is much larger in Somerset where the usual spelling is CHORLEY but CHARLEY and CHURLEY are also found. Given the spelling changes the CHARLEY, CHORLEY and CHURLEY family appear to be the same group. There is a singleton family in the mid to late 1600s at Kentisbury but more investigation is needed for this family. The name CHARLEY (CHARLIE) is the spelling used for the family in the Kentisbury area. I will be purchasing the Parish Registers for Kentisbury and Trentishoe. Mary was a late child baptized 20 years after her three siblings and carries the name of her older sister Mary. This Mary was married to William CHARLEY at Trentishoe in 1733 but appears to have died by 1734 when William remarries.

CHEATLE/CHETTLE

The CHEATLE family appeared to have lived at Ashby de la Zouch in the late 1700s. The Poll Book for Leicester (1741) lists: Robert CHETTLE (Framland Hundred - Welby (freehold-Abkettleby)), William CHETTLE (Goscote East Hundred - Twiford (freehold-Siston)), John CHETTLE ((Goscote West Hundred - Donnington Castle (freehold-Donnington on the Heath)), William CHETTLE (Guthlaxton Hundred - Knaptoft (freehold-Kilworth North)), John CHETTLE (Guthlaxton Hundred - Walcote (freehold-Whatton Long)), Michael CHETTLE (Guthlaxton Hundred - Walcote (Belton)), Joseph CHETTLE (Sparkenhoe Hundred - Ratcliffe Cuiley (freehold - not named)), Richard CHETTLE (Sparkenhoe Hundred - Witherley (freehold - not named)) and Thomas CHATTLE (Guthlaxton Hundred - Broughton Astley (freehold - not named)). I know very little about Sarah CHEATLE's father other than his name William and that her mother was also Sarah. Ashby de la Zouch is located in Goscote West Hundred. On the LDS, Ashby de la Zouch parish in the timeframe for Sarah CHEATLE's baptism there are three Williams married to Elizabeth, Ann and Sarah. William's baptism does not appear at Ashby de la Zouch but there is a William CHEATLE married to Sarah WOODCOCK 23 Feb 1773 at Castle Donnington. William and Sarah CHEATLE baptized the following children at Castle Donnington (Mary 1775, John 1777, Ann 1780, Sarah 1783 and Elizabeth 1786). There is still a lot of investigation to be done on this family.

COBB

The COBB family of Yorkshire have thus far been traced back to Kilnwick where John Cobb was baptized in 1750. Next sighting of John is at Lund where he married Ann Sproxton 24 November 1782. They had three children all baptized at Lund near Beverley, Yorkshire - Elizabeth 1783, Ann 1791 and John 1793. A review of the Parish Registers for Lund did not reveal any other children. A review of the Land Assessment Tax Records did reveal that John was at Lund during all of this time period. Elizabeth died in 1831 at Etton Yorkshire when her youngest child was four years old. James (the youngest) would eventually join his two eldest brothers in Canada. By 1832 Robert GRAY and William GRAY (see GRAY family) her two eldest sons were in Canada.

COLEMAN

One of my 3x great grandmothers was Sarah COLEMAN . She married Thomas BLAKE in 1792 and had ten children of whom only seven survived infancy. She died in 1816 when her last child was born. Sarah's father had died when Sarah was 7 years old. I purchased a very interesting document from the Hampshire Record Office (photocopy of the Licence to operate an Inn) issued to my COLEMAN family at Goodworth Clatford. DOVE

The DOVE family has been an elusive one. I first spotted the marriage of Thomas RAWLINS and Mary DOVE at Woodford 9 Dec 1807 in my early days of searching on the IGI. I initially latched onto the marriage as being the correct one but could not find a Mary DOVE who fitted into this family. I eventually dropped the link but kept it in the back of my mind. When we were at Salt Lake City last fall, one of my prime queries was to find the wife of Thomas RAWLINS and so I read through the registers of Woodford. I did indeed find a DOVE family (William DOVE and Jane MORGAN) having children in Woodford in this timeframe but did not find a baptism for Mary. I intend to purchase the parish registers for Woodford and a couple of small places around Woodford to examine this area more carefully for RAWLINS and DOVE since the location of my RAWLINS family before 1740 is unknown. Although the marriage is in 1807, the first child isn't born until 1813 (Harriet) and she died young. The next child was Isaac and he was born in 1818. I am curious if Thomas Rawlings was in the military during the Napoleonic Wars although I do not see him listed for any medals. His time periods away from 1807 to 1812 and again 1813 to 1817 are rather interesting. Nowhere does it state that he was a pensioner but their son William (b 1825) married the daughter of a pensioner (Elizabeth Lywood). It is a thought I am going to pursue at the first opportunity. The next child Harriet was born in 1819, the next Jeremiah in 1821, Jane in 1823 and my William in 1825. William appears to be the last child for this couple.

FARMER

Isaac FARMER died when Ann was just 4 years old. I found a baptism for Isaac FARMER at Collingbourne Kingston in 1764 but he appears to have been born at Andover. Chatting with a descendant of an older brother of Ann FARMER I discovered that one of the older sister's of Ann (Martha) had married Thomas HAWKINS of Collingbourne Ducis. Although I tentatively looked at the FARMER line at Collingbourne I may investigate it further but there is a FARMER family at Andover. Isaac signed his marriage registration with a very good signature - letters all clearly and carefully formed and written smoothly. Hasn't helped me yet but it is just one of those many clues you pick up along the way.

GRAY

Robert GRAY arrived in Canada West around 1832 from England accompanied by his brother William. They farmed for the remainder of their lives. Robert had been a farmer in England but land became scarce. Grace GRAY was his third daughter and my 2x great grandmother. Grace is my first Canadian born ancestor.

HARBORNE

The HARBORNE family were master shoemakers living in Birmingham on Smallwood Crescent near Bull Street (there are several families). Living closeby is the TAYLOR family into which Ann Lewis HARBORNE married. Interestingly enough John was living at St Andrews Worcester in 1807-1812 when the first three children were born but had returned to St Phillips Birmingham by 1813 when the two youngest children were born. John was baptized at Birmingham. This line though lacks that definitive proof in that my great grandmother Ellen TAYLOR's link back is based on family lore and sparce paper documentation. Hopefully, I will oneday find the marriage of Ellen TAYLOR and Edwin Denner BULLER which would then let me determine that indeed I have the correct TAYLOR family and hence go back to the HARBORNE family. It is interesting that they are a family of shoemakers as that is one detail that my grandmother clearly recalled about her mother's family.

HARVEY

The wedding registration for Joan HARVEY and Andrew ROWCLIFFE shows that Joan HARVEY is "of Dolton" and searching for her baptism on the IGI reveals a date of baptism 1 Mar 1690 and parents Christopher HARVEY and Mary STANBURY. I will check the original records for Dolton but a quick search does not yield a baptism for Christopher or Mary at this time.

HARLAND

The HARLAND family is found at Great Driffield and is one of my finds at the Family History Library at Salt Lake City. I was being somewhat restrictive though and limited myself to only going back to the 4x and 5x great grandparents level on this trip. Timothy would be my 6x great grandfather and he married Ann Wilkinson 24 Jun 1723 at Great Driffield. There is a baptism for a Timothy HARLAND 11 Apr 1674 but this would make him 50 when he married so suspect this is not him. The next trip to Salt Lake City (or borrowing the film!) will be a further look at the Parish Registers for Great Driffield to discover more about the HARLAND family. Timothy and Ann had four children: Jane b 1724, Leonard b 1725, William b 1727 and Ann b 1731.

HEMSLEY

The HEMSLEY family has been in my mind for quite a while because this is the second name of two of the BULLER children (my 2x great grandfather's siblings). I have looked at this family as a possible way to discover more about my BULLER family in the past. Having now found that it is the surname of the mother of Mary BEARD I have somewhat taken that name out of the BULLER equation. Again, I know almost nothing about the HEMSLEY family other than that John HEMSLEY was living at Grange Road (the same place as Elizabeth HEMSLEY) when he died about three months after she did in 1781. Of note, this family is found in Kirkby Overflow Yorkshire and I will explore that possibility as there is a John baptized in 1721 there son of Robert EMSLEY and Dinah HINDLEY and and Elizabeth daughter of John and Jane EMSLEY baptized there in 1742.

HILTON

The HILTON family is quite large in Yorkshire - lots more investigating to be done on this family. Having read the Parish Registers for Cherry Burton and environs, I have come to the conclusion that there was only one GRAY family there although they sometimes used the spelling GREY (older register). I will continue to review the register as I have not yet found a baptism for Jane HILTON at Cherry Burton. The closest one in the IGI is at Beverley (1 Aug 1739) and that Jane is the daughter of Thomas HILTON and Mary CONSTABLE.

KING

The KING family were found in Upper Clatford from the earliest registers on but I haven't located James KING father to my Thomas KING yet. Joanna KING (my 4x great grandmother) had just one sibling who died at birth and her mother died when Joanna was just eight years old. Thomas did not remarry (he was already 48 when Joanna was born but I haven't found an earlier marriage for him yet). Thomas KING married Ann CARTER 10 Jun 1728 at Upper Clatford so was a late marriage for both of them with Ann being 45 when Joanna was born. Joanna's husband Joseph BLAKE died young leaving her with four small children to raise including my 3x great grandfather born five months after his father's death. Thomas, Joanna's father died in 1762.

LAMBDEN

TheLAMBDEN family has been brickwalled at Andover since I first found my 3x great grandmother that was known to have been nearly 100 years old when she died (Elizabeth died in 1862 and was baptized in 1766 at Andover). I have the Parish Registers for Andover and surrounding parishes from which I have extracted the LAMBDEN and allied families. My great great great grandmother was a LAMBDEN. Although the priest has written her name as LAMBSDEN her father signed his surname on her wedding registration as LAMBDEN. Her father was Nathanael and I have not yet found, to date, a baptism for him in the Andover area. I am starting to look further afield into Berkshire where there are two Nathaniel/Nathanael baptisms at Thatcham in 1718 and at Bradfield in 1724. Either baptism would be possible since Nathanael and Sarah (marriage not known) did not baptize their first child until 1751 at Andover. Nathanael and Sarah's children were: Nathaniel baptized 23 Oct 1751, John 15 Jan 1758, William baptized 21 Sep 1760, and Elizabeth 16 Mar 1766. I have read the Parish Register for Andover between these dates and these were the only children baptized with Nathan(a or i)el and Sarah as parents between 1750 and 1780. Nathanael was a wheelwright.

LAWLEY

The LAWLEY family would be my mtDNA line and thus intrigues me very much. Since my link from Ellen TAYLOR back to the LAWLEY family is based on family lore, I have not overly pursued these lines of research other than the census documents and limited referral to the Parish Registers. Ellen LAWLEY is born at Wellington Shropshire according to the census and by the wedding registration her father is Joseph and a labourer. I look at material on the LAWLEY family but do not spend a great deal of time as my link at Ellen TAYLOR is based so much on family lore.

Bridget was not to live a long life (died at 32) and was buried just two years after her husband (who was 34 when he died). MANNING

Thomas MANNING married Elizabeth UPCOTT at Landkey Devon 7 May 1653. John and his brother Thomas were born at Landkey and I need to check the Parish Register to see if there is further information on Thomas and Elizabeth.

There are two MANNING signers of the Protestation Returns at Bishops Nympton - Andrew and Edmund. To date I have not been able to prove that Andrew married to Johan Worsaw (widow) 13 Jun 1558 who is the father of John b 27 Feb 1563 is also the father of Edmund b c 1560. John and Edmund both marry and it is likely that it is the Edmund and Andrew listed on the returns are sons since Edmund and Andrew are both baptizing children at Bishops Nympton in this time frame. I do not know if Thomas is a descendant of this family as there were several MANNING families in North Devon.

MOGGRIDGE/MOGRIDGE/MOGGERIDGE

I found the name MOGGRIDGE to be quite fascinating and managed to find about 150 BMD records for this family (included in the file with the SIDERFIN information). They lived in the Timberscombe and Wootton Courtney area until the 1800s when they are found at Minehead. I have two lines with both being connected via the REW family. I wonder if they are related but haven't been able to find that definitive clue that links them yet. Simon MOGGRIDGE and Robert MOGGERIDGE are the two furtherest back ancestors in these lines thus far.

PEARCE

The PEARCE Family has been another brickwall almost from the beginning of my research time. Online there are records that show Elizabeth PEARCE and John COLEMAN marrying at Old Alresford Hampshire but the parish registers for Abbots Ann clearly show their marriage to have been there. Another three PEARCE marriages also occur at Abbots Ann in this time period. The PEARCE family at Abbots Ann were malsters and this is perhaps a clue to the identity of this family. The COLEMAN family were Innkeepers at Goodworth Clatford in the late 1600s and early 1700s. William PEARCE and Elizabeth HAPGOOD marry at Elizabeth's parish of Collingbourne Kingston and I did look at these registers at Salt Lake City. I am going to purchase the fiche though as I want a longer look at them to see if there are details in these registers and those of Collingbourne Ducis which would definitively link William to the PEARCE family that was at Abbots Ann in the late 1600s and early 1700s.

PEARSE

There is a John PEARSE on the Protestation Returns for Bishops Nympton in the 1640s (this would need to be John Pearse b 28 Apr 1605 if it is him). The 1723 Loyalty Oaths list: Benjamin Pearse at Lapford, Edward Pearse of Combe Martin, Samuel Pearse of Ashwater, Jonathan Pearse of Warrington, Edward, John and Gideon Pearse of Holsworthy, John Pearse of Chittlehampton, John Pearse of Morebath, John Pearse of Northam, Richard Pearse of Hartland, Michael Pearse of Chulmleigh, Philip Pearse of Bickleigh, Robert Pearse of Hartland, William Pearse of Shebbear, and William Pearse of Broadclyst. Philip Pearse of Bickleigh is my ancestor and appears on the land records in this time period. The Pearse family is very large (I have only listed a few of the members signing the Loyalty Oath in 1723) and Lewes Pearse is not the ancestor to all of them as I can find only one son for him at South Molton and the family remains small through the generations.

PECK

The PECK family can be found at Milston Wiltshire back to the beginning of the Parish Registers. Martha PECK was the daughter of Elizabeth PECK. William PECK (b 1576) died by 1610 and his will dated 14 February 1610 was a marvelous find. William was a shepherd and he writes in his will that he is very sick in body and leaves (after a few bequests) all that he has to his wife and son. His son William (b 1605) is just five years old. A second son John b 1608 is not mentioned. Amazing treasure to have from a 9x great grandfather.

PINCOMBE (PENCOMB(E), PINCOMB, PINKHAM, PYNCOMBE)

The Protestation Returns for Bishops Nympton list John Pincombe sen, John Pincombe jun, William Pincombe sen and William Pincombe jun. William sen and William jun are father and son. However, John sen is the son of Richard Pincombe and his second wife Francis Gill and John jun is the son of William sen who was a son of Richard Pincombe and his first wife Anne. The Visitation for Devon 1620 dates the arrival of the Pencombe family at North Molton as 1485 arriving with Lord de la Zouch. There are three sons listed for an unknown Pencombe and I am trying to prove that there was likely an older Pencombe with two sons who in turn had the three sons (2 Johns and a Thomas) listed in the Visitation. William one of Thomas' sons had seven sons and two daughters whom he lists in his will. The records of some of the parishes do not go back far enough so I haven't been able to trace down five of these sons. I will collect as much information as possible on this family to see if they can be reconstructed. I have set up a Rootsweb Pincombe list and details can be found at the Pincombe List. I have also found DNA results on line for my PINCOMBE family (descendant of the brother of my 3x great grandfather Robert PINCOMBE (YSEARCH - XSEN6) and he would be my fifth cousin). I have set up a DNA Pincombe Surname Study at FT DNA. Details can be found at the Pincombe Surname Study. If you have already had your DNA tested you can join the group directly (the surname study provides a discount from the regular price at FT DNA for a 12 marker study).

RAWLIN[G]S

I have a picture of William RAWLINGS (b 1825) which I have inserted and it was taken around 1900. It is a wonderful picture of him when he is about 75 years old. I have a rough tracing of this family before the 1740s but need to verify with parish registers. Our visit to Salt Lake City allowed me to check the marriage of Thomas RAWLINS at Woodford where there is a marriage of a Thomas RAWLINS and Mary DOVE. They are both "of the parish" and there is a DOVE family at Woodford that I suspect is the family of Mary. There aren't any RAWLINS families at Woodford but there are closeby. The marriage of Jeremiah (Jerome) RAWLINS and Sarah TANNER at Tilshead I have now verified and the priest has added that Jeremiah RAWLINS was "of Enford" thus connecting this Jeremiah with the son of William RAWLINS and Mary. His baptism at Netheravon was a trifle confusing as the rest of their children are baptized at Enford but again a priest has added that this couple baptizing Jeremiah is from Enford. The RAWLIN[G]S family appear to have lived in the area of the Enford Downs from the 1500s on.

REW

The REW name has been found spelled several ways but John REW (father of my 2x great grandmother) spelled it REW on his will written in 1848. The marvels of the 1841 census found members of the REW family, members of the SIDERFIN family and members of the PINCOMBE family altogether at the home of the NURCOMBE family (aunt to my 2x great grandmother). Although I had sorted all of these families out and managed to align them correctly before finding the census, the confirmation was wonderful.

The ROBSON family is a very large one in Cumberland. My line is found at Lanercost and I now have the Protestation Returns to look at to see how many ROBSON lines were actually at Lanercost. I will be transcribing that in this next winter season of dedicated transcribing of original documents. My ROUTLEDGE family was located at Bewcastle Cumberland England. Mary had three ROUTLEDGE grandparents (Henry ROUTLEDGE, George ROUTLEDGE and Grace ROUTLEDGE. The ROUTLEDGE family are my first emigrants to Canada. The ROUTLEDGE family were still at their farm Parkhead in Bewcastle for the 1817 tax rolls but in 1818 Richard ROUTLEDGE was at Parkhead. The family were known to be in London Township by late 1818.

ROWCLIFFE

The ROWCLIFFE family appear in the Devon Freeholder's Book from 1711 - 1799. Andrew junior is found at Shebbear Hundred in Merton and William his brother is also found at Shebbear Hundred (Philip is at Bishops Nympton). A brother to Andrew senior is also found at Shebbear. Andrew appears on the 1723 Oath Roll for Devon as Andrew ROWLIFF at Merton. I am still working on the parents of Andrew ROWCLIFFE. If he is a son of Andrew ROWCLIFFE and Mary he would have had to be born before 1687 as the last child of this couple was baptized in March 1687 (Andrew was buried in February 1687). There are two other Rowcliffe males having children in Merton and I need to determine if they are sons of Andrew (d 1687).

SIDERFIN (SYDERFIN, SYDERFYN)

My ancestor Elizabeth (Betty) SIDERFIN was baptized at Selworthy, Somerset, England but lived at Bratton near Minehead. My great great great grandmother was a SIDERFIN. This excel file contains parish records for a number of families that intermarried with the SIDERFIN family. Siderfin.xls

A number of people have written to me querying the father of Elizabeth SIDERFIN (b 19 June 1759) being 103 years old when he died and over 60 when he married. After reviewing material at Salt Lake City I believe that James Hooper had made an error in his genealogy chart found at the back of his book. Definitely in the will of Grace Siderfin (1799) she is at Knowle. The Escott will lends further proof in that she is buried in the Siderfin plot (actually I suspect that the plot was originally the Escott plot but became the Siderfin plot in later years) of John at Knowle.

SPRING

The SPRING family at Andover has proven to be quite an interesting study. I am in the early stages as Mary is my 6x great grandmother and I have been working my way back from myself and I am still at the 4x great grandparents with respect to writing them up and gathering information although it was quite easy to get back to Mary in the Andover Parish Registers. Mary had a sad life in that her husband died when their only son Thomas was just 5 years old. She remained a widow and appears to have lived in a cottage at Foxcott. Her parents Richard SPRING and Jone WATKINS were married 11 Feb 1689 at Andover. They had three children: Katherine died at a young age, Mary and a younger brother Richard who was buried at the age of five. Richard's parents were: Richard SPRING and Ellen Drew and they married 9 Dec 1641 at Andover. They had four children: Sarah b 1641, Annie and Peter (twins) b 1643 and Richard b 1648. I have not found Richard's baptism but do have the early Andover fiche and hope to begin transcribing that this winter.

SPROXTON

The SPROXTON family were tailors and drapers at Great Driffield in the 1700s and 1800s. It is interesting that Ann who was baptized at Great Driffield in 1760 marries John COBB, a farmer, at Lund in 1782 and fortunately the priest has carefully recorded that John was born at Kilnwick and Ann was from Great Driffield. Although these places are close together by modern standards it is 1.9 miles from Lund to Kilnwick and 7 miles from Lund to Great Driffield. Perhaps the COBB family went to Great Driffield to have their clothing tailored - one can wonder.

TAPP

Ten TAPPE males signed the Protestation Returns at Bishops Nympton in 1641-42 - John Sr, Hugh, Nicholas, Henrie Sr were all brothers. I am still working on the TAPP family but they all appear to have a common ancestor John who lived at North Molton. John TAPP (b 5 Sep 1624) marries Ann THOMAS 29 Jun 1658 at Bishops Nympton where the parish register states that John's father is Roger TAPP and they are of the parish. The 1723 Loyalty Oaths list six TAPP family members: John, Hugh, Roger and Thomas Tapp are all at Twitchen, John Tapp at Lapford, and Matthew Tapp is at Colebrooke. I have not yet traced down all the sons of a John Tapp known to be the father of John Tapp (b 18 Sep 1561) and another son was: Richarde who married Jane Towte 6 May 1579 at Bishops Nympton (Jane was baptized at Bishops Nympton 26 Jan 1558). As well there was a John Tapp at North Molton with son: Roger (b 6 Oct 1595), John Tapp at North Molton has the following sons baptized there in the 1540s-1560s: Robart 1543, Thomas 1552, John 1561, Matthew 1567 and Richarde ?, plus his daughter Emett has a son John Tapp 1 May 1585. Next task is to draw out the Tapp family members from the North Molton register.

TAYLOR

My TAYLOR family has been very elusive and this is my mtDNA line. I can trace back to my great grandmother Ellen TAYLOR who married Edwin Denner BULLER in approximately 1885 or early 1886. All children born to this couple list their mother as Ellen BULLER nee TAYLOR. I have eliminated every Ellen TAYLOR born in Birmingham in the 1858 to 1862 range other than this one. Ellen's death registration states her age as 37 years old 28 Feb 1896 (if she was only 36 this would make her birth in 1860). Her place of birth is listed on the 1891 census as Birmingham. By elimination Thomas TAYLOR and Ellen ROBERTS would appear to be her parents - they are missing a child Ellen on the 1881 census and the Ellen on the 1871 census with her mother Ellen and again on the 1861 census with her parents Thomas and Ellen would appear to be the Ellen on the 1881 census in Birmingham with her daughter Florence. My greatgrandmother would appear to have had six siblings and finding a descendant of one of these siblings would be of great assistance - Thomas b 1858, Eliza(beth) b 1862, Kate (Kathryn) b 1868, Marianne (Mary Ann) b 1869, and William b 1871. According to family lore (my grandmother who would have been 11 when her mother died), her mother's father was a shoemaker (Thomas was a shoemaker as was his father) at Birmingham although by this time they were living in Lancashire at Ashton under Lyne (from 1881 census on)). She also remembered an "Aunt Kate" which fits in with one of the siblings of this Ellen and that her grandmother's name was also Ellen. When my grandmother went to England in 1939 she visited "family" at Ashton in Lancashire as I recall from her descriptions of her trip to England (she was there for several months).

TAYLOR

William TAYLOR was my grandmother's adopted father. Whether this was a formal adoption or simply my grandmother being raised by her mother's husband is unknown to me. By the 1891 census Ada Bessie Cotteril Rawlings was now called Bessie Taylor and by the 1901 census she was listed as Edith B Taylor. She was always known as Edith Bessie in her adulthood. She was apprenticed as a Cook, completed her training and was in the employ of the Manor House in Kimpton when she married at the age of 27. William was born at Ludgershall RD September quarter 1858 (I need to purchase his certificate) and the son of Joseph Taylor (b 1809 Ludgershall (census)) and Mary Pinnels (married December quarter 1854 Ludgershall RD). Mary was born at Tedworth in 1821 (census). The parents of Joseph Taylor were Isaac Taylor and Mary. Isaac was born circa 1769 in Wiltshire (census). I plan to purchase the certificates and learn more about this family as well. Joseph marries quite late at the age of 45 and they go on to have seven children (six sons and one daughter). My father's forename comes from this family line (Ernest) which perhaps in itself shows the importance of her step-father in my grandmother's life.

VICARY

The VICARY family lived at Rose Ash Devon and are found there in the earliest parish registers. Alexander VICARY (senior) was Churchwarden in 1605 and 1606. A possible son was Alexander VICARY junior and he married Mary BRAY 28 Jan 1622 at Rose Ash. His baptism may have preceded the beginning of the register (1590) or it possibly could be an entry on the first page in 1592 which is very difficult to read. John Vicary married Frances Southcombe 7 Jun 1596 at Rose Ash and their eldest daughter Jane was baptized 11 Dec 1597 at Rose Ash. Although it is possible for Alexander to be their son I can not find anything to prove that. The Parish Register for Bishops Nympton lists Mary Vicary as the daughter of Christopher Viccary of Rose Ash in the marriage registration.

Reading back through the register from William WELCH's baptism (and that of his siblings), it is possible to go back to his parents (John WELCH and Margaret BROCKHOUSE) and both of their parents married at Rugeley as well. However the parents of Thomas WELCH did not marry at Rugeley and the next step is to check the parish registers for FAREWELL as there is a WELCH family living there. William WELCH (3x great grandfather) had a restaurant (Mr. Welch's Eating Place) on Lower Temple Street in Birmingham. My 2x great grandmother was a WELCH.
