KINDERGARTEN
FIESTA

Cinco de Mayo

It is fun and exciting to learn about the cultures and traditions of other countries. During the month of May, we take one week to study a few of Mexico's traditions and culture.  Arizona, the state we live in, borders Mexico. It is a fun time for some of our students to share with their peers the culture of their families that have moved to Arizona from Mexico. We integrate songs, counting, Mexican history, literature, arts, crafts and social studies into our unit.

CINCO de MAYO
UNIT

PROJECT PROFILE:
We will read and explore many resources to learn about Mexico, it's people and why they celebrate Cinco de Mayo. We will do this through books, pictures and information off the Internet, songs, math projects, art and craft projects, and by experiencing a fiesta.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
The students will identify and locate Mexico on a map and on the globe.
The students will develop an awareness and understanding of people from a different culture.
The students will learn why Mexico celebrates Cinco de Mayo.
The students will be able to convey some historical facts about Mexico's, Cinco de Mayo.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT:
In our book box we will have several books on Mexico. In my unit, Cinco de Mayo, I have a variety of books that I read to the students during Cinco de Mayo week. All of our activities will be introduced to the whole group. The students will work on their projects individually.
TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT:
In our classroom we have one computer that is online. I will use the internet to pull facts, pictures, activities and print out email from our Flat Stanley Project. I will have everything downloaded and printed before class. My collection for the Cinco de Mayo unit is complete. I have the internet at home, so if something was to happen to our computer at school, i.e.. if the internet was down, I would have the ability to run pictures, information and email off before coming to school.
TIME MANAGEMENT:
Cinco de Mayo: One Week
Daily: We spend 30-40 minutes a day on history, singing and activities.
