Many of them lived at Charlton, a hamlet on the edge of Andover, although some lived in town and worked on nearby farms. Most of them came to St. Mary's church in Andover for weddings, baptisms, etc. no matter how far out of town they lived. Through much of its long history, Andover was a relatively small, quiet town. I think that when I was younger, it had only 10,000 to 14,000 people. Today Andover is a town of about 30,700 people in northern Hampshire, 13 miles northwest of Winchester, very close to Wiltshire and Berkshire. The town has been in continuous habitation since Saxon times and was granted its first charter in 1175 by King Henry II. The town's name survives from pre-Saxon times: Onnadwfr or Andefera - The river of the ash trees. Throughout its history Andover has been situated on important lines of communication and transportation. In medieval times, Andover, with its rivers Ann and Anton, was a stopping off point for pilgrims taking the ancient Harrow Way. Later coaches on the Exeter route stopped here and, during the railway age, there were stations on both the east-west and north-south lines. Andover traditionally served as the market town for the surrounding agricultural areas, but the local economy has changed significantly in recent decades. A planning agreement signed in 1961 with the London County Council has nearly doubled the town=s population and brought many new firms to the industrial estates, including the main facility of the Twining tea company. Careful planning has allowed Andover to retain the atmosphere of a traditional market town even as it has become a major center for modern industry and commerce. Although part of the town center has been redeveloped with new shops, there are still many older shops and farmers still bring their wares to the street market in the High Street twice a week. It carries plausible evidence of a link between the WYTHER family of Lancashire and a WITHERS family of Hampshire and subsequently Wiltshire but there is no reference to Bishops Cannings, (Wilts.) ... The book contains strong reference to a link between Lancashire and the Manydown estate in Hampshire. I gather from elsewhere that a Rev. Lovelace BIGG-WITHER was a one-time occupant of Manydown House (built 1662)...." - davidwithers"at"bigfoot.com 2001 "A history of the WITHER family" by Rev. RF BIGG-WITHER (1907). The book records that the WYTHER/WITHER family came originally from LANCASHIRE - Pendleton Hall - dates given are 1189 - 1389. Thomas WYTHER living c 1363 had three sons 1) Thomas 2) Richard 3) Robert Robert, the youngest "came to Manydown, and his descendants and their history are fully recorded under Wyther of HAMPSHIRE." (pg 11) Thomas, the elder killed a knight and fled into CHESHIRE. His descendants are recorded as being traced "to the fourth generation, where they apparently end in three monks" Richard, the second son through his grandson Robert had descendants in LONDON , ESSEX and SOMERSETSHIRE. The book then deals with the WITHER family of HAMPSHIRE (1389 - 1871) and of Manydown. This family died out in the male line to become BIGG - WITHER after a WITHER daughter married a BIGG. The last of the WITHERS of Manydown are recorded as having died 31 October 1789. Manydown Park, Tangier Park and Oakley Hall/Oakley Manor (all occupied by various associated WITHERS the subject of the book) seem to be in close proximity , ie in Hampshire or thereabouts. The book deals with the estates and contains some photographs of Manydown including at least one interior shot of a mantlepiece. There is mention of connected families but the only connected WITHERS are shown to be of Liverpool, London and Somersetshire and USA. The site http://www.withersfamily.com/withersgenl.html giving "Descendants of Sir Knight Robert WYTHER", under no. 6 - Thomas WYTHER Esq, refers to Thomas inheriting the seat of Manydown. The book makes some interesting comment on the Liverpool WITHERS (note "s") (pg 160) in a section headed " Families That Add "S" To The Name WITHER, But Bear The WITHER Arms". "This family bear and have borne for some generations the same coat of arms as WITHER of Manydown. These young men were of fine stature, and averaged nearly six feet tall. It appeared from the statement of Stephen SHIPMAN (the survivor) who is between 17 and 18 years of age, that on Sunday evening last, about 6 o'clock, he and the above unfortunate individuals left All Cannings for a walk - when they went to Stanton St. Bernard, which is a mile and a half off. They proceeded by the Kennet and Avon Canal, and at times walked on the ice, till they reached Stanton, on their way back, as they were all walking upon the canal, the ice broke, when they fell into the water. All was silence directly, and witness saw no more of his companions. In sinking, he caught hold of the edge of some old ice, and remained for some time in this position, till at last, with much difficulty he raised one leg on the ice, and after more delay and great effort, he was enabled to get up the other, and then he crawled to the bank; but it was some time before he could stand, being so cold and weak. Afterwards he went to All Cannings, which he reached about 10 o'clock and gave information of what had taken place. Their friends and relations immediately went to the spot, where they saw the hats of the deceased on the water, and returned for the morning, when the bodies were taken out of the canal. Henry WITHERS was found in an upright position, and his hair was frozen to the top of the ice. Verdict - Accidentally Drowned All were unmarried men. They had, we understand, been to the house of Thomas BROOMHAM, at Stanton, where they drank six quarts of beer between them, but it is stated that they left sober. The following is from a correspondent: - On Sunday night last, five young men of the parish of All Cannings, returning from Stanton, were rash enough to venture on the canal, the ice of which is daily broken by the barges. Still they went upon it, whether to slide or merely to cross the water is not known, and were instantly immersed, and soon sunk, to rise no more. One of the party, however, escaped, through the mercy of God, after struggling for about an hour, and by the help of the masses of ice around him, finally reached the shore. What overwhelming sorrow to the families of these deceased youths this fearful visitation has occasioned, may too easily be conceived. Nor should the voice of God, here admonishing the young both of the uncertainty of life, and the value of each returning Sabbath be speedily forgotten.
