Pedro Alvares Cabral
Pedro Álvares Cabral (1467 - 1520), was a Portuguese navigator and explorer, regarded as first European discoverer of the sea route to Brazil. He was born in Belmonte, Beira Baixa province, Portugal. Pedro Álvares Cabral was the third son of Fernão Cabral (Governor of Beira and Belmonte), and Isabel de Gouveia de Queirós (descendant of the first King of Portugal, Afonso I). He married Isabel de Castro, the daughter of the distinguished Fernão de Noronha (also descendant of King Afonso I). Pedro Álvares Cabral's fleet took off from Lisbon on 09/03/1500, and on 22/04/1500 landed on the coast of Brazil. Apart from Brazil, Pedro Álvares Cabral also sailed as far as to India on 13/09/1500 mainly for the spices trade.
