AVES The outlook for the projected YVO-Aves operation was rather dark last Friday and
if the problems were not worked out, possibility for any action from the Caribbean
island are very likely out until next year.
Last Wednesday, K5AAD/WA5ZNY and KV4FZ had a license. However reports from Venezuela
were that no license had been issued. When finally nailed down, it appeared that
rather than an amateur license for the operation on Aves being issued, a point-to-
point communications license had been issued. The call YV0CCA has been reserved for
the University there in Venezuela but no amateur license was issued and YV0AA is the
only valid license existing for Aves at this time.
On the basis of reports of the projected operation, Venezuelan officials cabled the
FCC that an illegal operation had been going on, apparently anticipating that the
original date for the operation-had been met.
There also seems to be the problem that the Minister of Communications issued a
regulation some months back that Aves would only be reserved for operation by YV
operators and no others. The radio club in Caracas is reported to have been
considering an operation to YV0-Aves next year, this being three years since the last
effort there in May 1970, that being a 3-day effort. Some have speculated that any
long-term operation at Aves at this time probably would dry up a good deal of any
Demand or business for the possible 1973 operation.
The transportation vessel was reported to be one being used by a cooperative group
from the universities and other agencies there in Venezuela who were going to Aves on
an ecological trip, with bird-banding, research and study being their goal. The
communications were to be augmented by the amateurs to supply a bit more reliability
on the trip and especially with the hurricane season on at this time.
If the last minute efforts to straighten out the license problems were not successful,
it was very probable that K5AAD and WA5ZNY would return to Houston. A week ago they
operated from FS7 . . . QSLs for all the he efforts go to W5GJ, the father of Don,
K5AAD and David, WA5ZNY. W5MBB is the mother of the two and W5PIO is the grandfather.
Listen the first part of the week. The boat was due to depart for Aves Sunday morning
and if your ears do not detect the pile-up, you know why..

MINERVA/MARIA THERESA The September QST will carry the information on these
two, one completely annulled, the other deleted. The words will go something
   like this:

DXCC NOTES: Announcement is hereby made of two actions being taken which concern ARRL
   Country List and DXCC credits.
   1. Effective October 1, 1972, the Maria Theresa listing which has appeared on ARRL
Country List is removed and all DXCC credits which have been given for that
listing will be annulled. Information has been gathered which leaves no question but
that no island, reef or shoal exists in the area between 36o 50S to 37o 15S and from 150o
45W to 151o 37W. The area in which Maria Theresa was alleged to be located. Official
government charts of numerous soundings made in this area show no depths of loss than
   2850 fathoms.
   2. Effective October 1, 1972, the listing which appears on ARRL Country List of
Minerva Reef will become a deleted country and only contacts made prior to July 15,
1972 will be credited towards the Minerva Reef listing. The Kingdom of Tonga..
Because Minerva Reef is less than 500 miles from Tonga it no longer meets any of the
points for the criteria for separate status in the ARRL Country List. (Next Page)

                                  [page break]

                                                                   8 August 72
MINERVA/MARIA THERESA (continued)
The removal from the Arrl Country list Of the Maria Theresa listing and the annulment
of all previous DXCC credit and the deletion of Minerva reef is in accord with
recommendations which have been made by the ARRL DX Advisory committee.

There is a slight gap in our copy of the full details but essentially what it will
say is that the Kingdom of Tonga has laid claim to the Minerva Reefs etc, etc. Get
the full details in the September QST.

TRINIDADE The PY0-Trinidade still seems to be set, ten through 160 mtrs operation.
It has been reported that HB0XKW (WB8AKW) is already on the island...also it is
possible that the operation may open a bit earlier than August 13th .... this being
passed along last week by LU3AU, one of the participants. As this is for 48 hours
   or less . . . . . Be Prepared!!

EAST AFRICA DESK A note from Andre Saunders 5Z4KL says he has renewed his license
for Aldabra, VA9KL/A and may try an operation there in the future. Some sources say
there is scant demand for this one. Andre has made inquiry to the ARRL whether
Astove Island in the same group would be accepted for Aldabra, Astove about 100 miles
further east and has an airstrip.
Andre is also working on a possible Juan de Nova operation in December. At this
time he is getting the licensing problems worked out and he figures a good portion of
the transportation problems have been solved for him on this one .... at least as far
   as Madagascar he hopes.
There has been a change in the Somali ambassador to Kenya and while 5A4i@L has
renewed his application for a 601-license and operating permit, he was turned down
last year and Somali does not look too favorable. Andre is also trying to line up
something for TL8-Central African Republic. His parents and in-laws will be visiting
him in August so the most likely time for action will be December.....Aldabra and
Juan de Nova being the hottest prospects. Andre, a school teacher there at Kenya
Polytechnic, would be needing support for any of these .... both actually low-budget
   operations.

IRAQ OD5HT was due to go to YI-Iraq in early August and was hoping he would find the
way to got on the air. Another one heading that way is OK1ADM who will be visiting
YK-Syria, JY-Jordan and YI-Iraq, he also being one of the hopefuls. One of these
days there will be a YI-operation .... it's the 'when' that is hard to bear....

NOTES One amateur wrote to the French Consul in Boston and asked about a visa for
Clipperton. He got back an answer from the Vice-Consul that no visa would be needed
if the stay was less than three months. Son of a Gun, one more problem solved. The
late, late word is that no one is going to be given permission to land on Clipperton.
No one!! 3D2AN may get to Futuna Island to sign FW8 in the near future. There are
also some evanscent reports that Kure will possibly see a lot of action in a October
Test. KA2DX looking to operate from Marcus during the CQ Test in October. . . .Billy
was on leave in San Diego last week. The VK-ZL test will warm things up in October
   ....phone from 1000Z on Saturday, October 7.... c.w. from 1000Z October 14th...24
   hrs.

SHORTLY NOTED With some unusual prefixes showing up from time to time, a check of
the International prefix assignments in the ARRL Handbook will often answer the
question whether it is a new one, a new body on an old chassis or just Slim on Cray
Island again...a number of possibles have been mentioned for some A51 operations this
Fall. These include VU2s plus some outside help. AC3 also being mentioned but as
yet nothing definite. The former King there who died in Nairobi in July was only 45
years old...and had been regarded as a reformist during his reign.
VP8ME QSLs to 2013 Melissa, Arlington, Tex 76010. Recent reports say that no one is
or has been active recently from S21-Bangdalesh but something might develop shortly.
XV5AC said to be trying to get a 3W8-call assigned. FB8ZZ does not seem to have too
much trouble with English in recent contacts...shows up in the U.S. band frequently.
Some JAs are reported to have QSL cards for ZD3D on 80/160mtrs. Some JAs were on
Spratly in June and found no one on the island...not even a tree in fact. However, a
number of armed vessels were seen in the vicinity. The JAs are also investigating
the possibility of arranging for a vessel from DU-land to the islands and are asking
their own government if they will need landing permission. Typhoon #6 in the present
season took down most of the amateur antennas on Ogasawara.

WEST COAST DX BULLETIN Published every week by the Marin County DX Group. One of
the entrenched establishment came by last week, slammed down the latest copy of QST
onto the bench, and growled: "Don't try to tell me the ARRL is not headed down the
road in a handbag. Look at this magazine...they are printing technical articles
written by WBs. WB2s!!!. The e.e. snorted. "How does a WB call get to tell us Ws
about amateur radio...we invented it for them". Son of a Gun, what could we say in
the face of such original thinking? Someone tried the other day to tell us that WA
calls have been around for 14 years. We are going to have to research that one. In
these times Amateur radio much watch to protect its time-honored sense of values.
For $9.00 you will get a full year of DX values...time honored for sure. $10.50
brings it airmail. Protect Amateur Radio...Yell. ...Louder!
