Unit Profile
The NPCC unit at Jurong West Secondary School was formed on 31 Jan 2001 with only 32 cadets. Now there are 2 squads consisting of a total of 58 cadets. Our very first Officer-in-Charge was Ag ASP Suzanne Lee. In May this year, we were excited to have Mr Jeffrey Tan, a new teacher who is going for training at the end of the year, to join the unit. The units first Cadet Inspector was CI Norirwansah Bin Ramli, who was formerly from St Josephs Institution. In early July 2001, CI Jack Ang was posted to the unit from Swiss Cottage Secondary School, while HI Jeffrey Sim arrived in late August from Buona Vista Secondary School. At the beginning of 2002, HI Jeffrey Sim enlisted the help of 2 female instructors to help run the unit. They are Instructors Regina and Yun Wei, formerly from Queensway Secondary School.

Our schools NPCC unit has grown from strength to strength. In February this year, our
Sec 2 NPCC boys team participated in a National Campcraft competition, where they had to pitch a tent and build a flag staff and rubbish bin within 9 minutes. We managed to beat two thirds of the 119 schools which participated, even a few top schools. The team truly gained a lot of experience from this competition. We also participated in a Field-cooking competition in May this year.

The cadets acquire many new skills at the NPCC. Other than
drills and campcraft, they also learn about Total Defence, crime prevention and even setting up of a Neighbourhood Watch group! The cadets also attend interesting courses as part of their training. Last year, they went for an Archery course. On the other hand, on the 6th of April this year, they underwent a roller-skating course where they had a great time skating round the parade square!

We also go for many visits to Police units. The Secondary One cadets went for a Dog unit visit in March where they had a chance to see dogs performing stunts such as jumping through a ring of fire! The Sec 2 cadets had a thrilling time at the Traffic Police in February where they had a first-hand experience of sitting on Traffic Police scooters! One of the most memorable visits for the Sec 2s will be the Practice shoot at Police Academy where they had to
shoot live rounds using a 0.22 revolver. They had to wear mufflers and goggles for protection and many of them were trembling with fear and excitement while shooting!

Our unit also participates actively in community service. The Sec 1 cadets did gardening for the school in March this year and carried out community work at Jurong Bird Park in July. On the other hand, the Sec 2 cadets  cleaned the HDB flats near the school in July as part of their service to community.

The NPCC unit embarked on an educational trip to Kukup, Malaysia on the 31st of May this year where we visited a Pewterware Manufacturing Company and a floating fish farm. We even spent some time shopping at Giant Hypermart!

To conclude, we believe that with our continual expansion of manpower to run this unit, we will be able to
Lead, Train and Nurture our cadets to a Greater Height.
