3. DISCIPLINE, TURNOUT AND ETIQUETTE IN UNIFORM

A. Importance of Etiquette in Uniform
I. When in uniform, you are to set aside from the other pupils in schools and you are identified with the National Police Cadet Corps;
II. In the eyes of the public, you shed your individuality and people associate you with the corps;
III. When a cadet/officer is careless about his appearance, is rude or has misbehaves, he gives a poor impression of the Corps;
IV. Therefore, it is important that you must be proud of your uniform and obey all regulations and orders and make an extra effort to have a high level of conduct and behaviour;
V. This is necessary to give a good impression and in turn enhance the image of the corps.

B. PERSONAL APPEARANCE
I. Cadets should be smart in their turn-out, bearing and deportment;
II. Smart turn-out and deportment means wearing the various items of the uniform correctly. Thos includes uniform, beret, belt and shoes. It also means keeping neat and trimmed hair as well as wearing clean and polished shoes;
III. Smart bearing means looking smart in the way you walk and stand.

C. UNIFORM
I. Shirt should be comfortably loose and not body hugging;
II. For males, the seat of the trousers should be reasonably loose and not too tight. The legs of the trouser are to cover the ankles and should not have big flares. Collars must be well ironed whereby it stands;
III. For females, skirt should worn two inches above the knee-cap and collars must be well pressed;
IV. Make sure the uniform is always washed and ironed properly.

D. BERET ( FOR CADETS )
I. The beret is worn level with the forehead. The brim of the beret should be about 2.5 cm directly above the left eyebrow;
II. The cap badge must also be directly above the left eye;
III. The beret is folded on the right, the ribbon should be neatly tucked inside the leather band.

E. PEAKED CAP / ROUND HAT ( FOR MALE / FEMALE OFFICERS )
I. The peaked cap / round hat should rest comfortably on the head and should not be able to shift/drop easily;
II. The sides of the peaked cap should not be purposely bent, nor should wires be inserted into it. It should be allowed to take its natural shape;
III. The flaps on the side of the round hat should be folded neatly such that they remain close to the body of the hat;
IV. The front of the peaked cap/round hat should extend over but not cover the eyes.

F. HAIR
I. For males, the hair should be trimmed short at the sides and back and it should not touch the collar;
II. Females should preferably keep their hair short. However, they may have long hair provided it is neatly pinned up and does not look untidy when the beret is on.

G. BELT
I. The belt should be worn comfortably tight at the waist.

H. BOOTS/SHOES
I. Boots/shoes are to be polished and kept clean at all times. New boots should be given a generous coating of shoe polish and polished with a soaked piece of cloth or cotton wool;
II. Boots/shoes should not have horseshoes and studs under them.

I. SOCKS
I. Black only with no logos;
II. For girls, socks must not be folded and should be at the shin level i.e about 10 cm above the ankle.

J. WHISTLE CHAIN
I. For males, whistle is to be attached to the chain;
II. The whistle should be placed inside the left chest pocket and the chain hooked onto the second button from the inside out

K. BEARING ANF DEPORTMENT
I. When in uniform, cadets should sit, stand and walk upright;
II. Do not stand with hands on hips and elbows bent outwards;
III. Do not place hands on belt;
IV. Do not fold arms across chest as this gives an impression of aggressiveness and arrogance;
V. Do not stand with the weight of the body resting on one foot, giving the appearance of slouching.

L. GENERAL BEHAVIOUR WHEN IN UNIFORM
I. Berets must be worn whilst travelling from one place to another i.e in vehicles or walking about in public;
II. Cadets in uniform should refrain from taking refreshments by the roadside, in public. They should be in their best behaviour when in uniform;
III. When speaking to senior officers, cadets should stand at attention and say “Sir” or “Madam” as the case may be, when answering;
IV. Cadets must take orders without argument or question.

M. COMPLIMENTS
I. It is a gesture of good manners to greet an officer either by saluting or standing to attention;
II. You salute only when you are in full uniform with the beret on. If you do not have your beret on, you greet superiors by standing to attention;
III. Officers to be saluted when in full uniform include all senior officers of rank Cadet Inspector and above as well as all Station Inspectors;
IV. This rule also applies to Police officers of the above mentioned ranks in full uniform.

N. PASSING BY AN OFFICER
I. When passing by an officer, about 5 steps before reaching the officer, a cadet in uniform should turn his head to face the officer and simultaneously salute with the right hand and greet the officer. The left hand should be still at the side of the body. Carry on marching after passing the officer;
II. When passing by an officer, a cadet in uniform without his beret on should turn his head to face the officer and greet the officer. Both hands are kept still by the sides of the body ( no saluting ) and the cadet carries on marching. Swing the arms only after passing the officer.

O. SPEAKING TO AN OFFICER
I. When a cadet wishes to speak to an officer or when he is asked to see a senior officer, he should halt about three feet in front of the officer, salute and then speak to the officer;
II. After the conversation, he should take one step back, salute, about turn and march off.
III. He must also say “Sir” or “Madam” when answering.

P. RECEIVING/GIVING ARTICLES FROM/TO AN OFFICER
I. When receiving articled from an officer or giving articles to an officer, a cadet should halt about three feet in front of the officer, salute and receive the article or hand over the article with the right hand;
II. After receiving the article, pass it to the left hand and say “Thank you, Sir/Madam”;
III. Take one step back, salute, about turn and march off.

Q. IN A GROUP
I. When a group is approached by an officer, the senior cadet or NCO will call the group to attention;
II. When a group is marching towards an officer either on the left or right side, the squad commander will have to give the command either “Pandan Kanan” or “Pandan Kiri” about 10 steps before reaching the officer;
III. The squad commander will salute and greet the officer. The rest of the squad will do the eyes right or left depending on where the officer is standing. After having passed the officer, the squad commander will have to give the command “Pandan Ke-Hadapan”

R. DISMISSAL AT PARADE
I. At a parade, on dismissal, when the parade commander gives the command “Besurai”, the squad will turn to the right and then salute the officer, depending on where he is standing. It can be in front, left or right.

S. IN THE CLASSROOM/LECTURE THEATRE
I. Always stand up when an officer or lecturer enters the room;
II. When an officer or lecturer enters the room, a command “Sedia” must be given by the squad in-charge, cadets will then stand at attention, and when the command “Senang Diri” is given, they can sit down. The squad i/c will then greet the officer;
III. When in class, cadets must sit up straight with hands reating on desk with their berets resting either on the table or on their laps.
