"OH BOYE" 1999 Captain’s Trip Log

Date 7/10/1999

Origin: Mystery Ship Marina

Captain: Joel A. Williams Passengers: Deanna, Bradley, Gary, & JoAnn

Trip Notes: Today is the first day we used the boat since taking ownership of it yesterday. The first run was to Sturgeon Bay. Gary showed me the basic operation of the boat on the way there. While there Gary, JoAnn and me looked at boats that Gary was interested in. We also ate lunch at DJ’s and then returned to Mystery Ship. Parking at DJ’s went well. Parking upon return was a bit fuzzy as it took two attempts to park successfully.

Origin Mystery Ship Marina Portage Chambers Island

Captain Joel A. Williams Passenger Deanna, Bradley, and the Rager Family - Lisa, Don, Keith, & Heather

Trip Notes: 7/20 We stopped at the Menominee Marina to Gas up and pump out but their tank ran out of fuel after only nine gallons. I did do a good job parking. We had a calm cruise to Cambers Island. After grilling out we built a fire on the beach and had an enjoyable evening. The power went out in the boat due to a bad fuse which we had no replacement for. We did have intermittent power since the fuse that was going bad was a time delayed fuse.

7/21 After a cold bay bath and some wringing our from the nights rain, we went to Fish Creek and once again I did a good job parking at the wall. We at lunch at Calamity Sams and then walked to the jewelry store where Deanna bought a ring the summer of 1998. She had her ring cleaned ans so did Don. Deanna also looked at a necklace that she likes – I hope she doesn’t buy it. We then went to some other stores and back to the boat to gas up where once again I did a good job parking. We then went to Sister Bay in about three foot seas and had a smooth ride. I was a little nervous about parking in the Sister Bay Marina since it was very tight with a lot of boats docked. I did a good job – I think I finally have this boat figured out. We ate dinner at the Norther Grill which had great pizza.

7/22 After the Rager Family left to go back to Illinois, Deanna, Bradley and I went to Seagull Bar where Bradley and I swam and then returned to Mystery Ship Marina.

Origin Mystery Ship Marina

Captain Joel A. Williams Passenger Bradley, Mike Harper, Chris Williams

Trip Notes 7/23 Tom Matikowski had built two boards out of White Ash which Mike Harper and I attached four downriggers and four pole holders to. Chris, Mike, Bradley, and I slept on the boat Friday night in the Mystery Ship Marina.

7/24 At 3:30 AM we left the Mystery Ship Marina and headed to the trout Bar. Tom Matikowski followed us out there from the boat landing at the mouth of the river. At 5:45, the first fish was caught by Mike harper. A 12 pound Brown. At 6:15 the second fish was caught by Mike again – a 10 pound Brown. Around Noon we went to the Mystery Ship Marina and gassed up. We then went to the Menominee Marina to register the fish. On the way out of the Marina we spun a prop and had to return to the Mystery ship marina to replace prop. Shortly after we replaced the prop a storm came through with very fast winds and rain. We did not fish again today. In early evening, Mike Harper’s parents came aboard and we took the boat to Chris’ house where we grilled the fish and had a wonderful dinner. That night, Bradley and I spent the night on the boat in the park / boatlanding about 1 mile south of Chris’ house.

7/25 At 3:30 AM, Chris, Mike Harper, Bradley and I left the park to continue fishing. We fished the trout bar until around noon and decided to fish whaleback schoal. We caught nothing. Around 3:30, I noticed we needed fuel so I called Sister Bay Marina and they said we could buy fuel at the Yacht Works in Sister Bay until 7:00 PM. We arrived at the Yacht Works around 4:00 and they were closed. We then went the Sister Bay Marina and put 7.5 gallons of fuel in the boat from two gas cans. We then went to Fish Creek and gassed up. We arrived at the Menominee Marina around 5:40 for the end of the Brown Trout Derby festivities. We then returned to the Mystery Ship Marina and took off the fishing equipment and cleaned the boat.

Origin Mystery Ship Marina Portage Escanaba Municipal Marina, Fayette Park

Captain Joel A. Williams Passengers Deanna, Bradley

Trip Notes 7/30 Deanna, Bradley, and I in convoy with Billie Jo and her husband Jamie in their new Crown Line 225 along with Gary, JoAnn, and Tom in their new Carver Mariner went up to Escanaba. While in the Escanaba Marina a storm came through with 70 MPH winds. Fortunately, all boats faired well.

7/31 JoAnn, Gary, Tom, joined us in Gary’s boat and Monty and Marie joined in their boat along with Keith and two others on PWCs. Later in the day it became windy and we decided to spend the night at Fayette changing from our original plans of going to Sister Bay. Everyone else returned to Escanaba.

8/1 We left Fayette along with our friends in the Crowline and went to Fish Creek for Lunch after stopping at Rock Island for a quick stop. We then returned to the Mystery Ship Marina to end the weekend.

Origin Mystery Ship Marina Portage Sturgeon Bay Harbor Club, Menominee Marina

Captain Joel A. Williams Passengers Rodney and Kelly with their two children Megan and Mitchel along with Deanna and Bradley

Trip Notes 8/6 Gary and JoAnn met us at the Harbor Club Marina. We ate dinner at DJ’s On the Bay and listened to a live band

8/7 We left the Harbor Club Marina around 11:00 AM and went to the Menominee Municipal Marina for the annual Waterfront Festival. We travelled to Menominee from Sturgeon Bay in Small Craft Advisory conditions. The boat handled very well. We travelled with the bow down at about 20 MPH with no problems. We arrived at the Menominee Marina and initially docked along the South wall and then moved and docked perpendicular to the stern of Gary and JoAnn’s boat. We enjoyed the festivities. I fixed the running lights and the AM/FM radio. In the evening Bob and Lisa along with their daughter Kelsy came and watched the fireworks with us on the boat.

8/8 We spent the day in the Menominee Marina enjoying the waterfront festival. In the evening Rodney and I took the boat back to the Mystery Ship Marina. Deanna and the rest of the crew met us there. It was a fun weekend without a lot of boat travel.

Origin Mysterey Ship Marina Portage Escanaba Municipal Marina

Captain Joel A. Williams Passenger Deanna

Trip Notes 8/20 Left marina 16:00 CDT. Bradley rode with the Gary & JoAnn. Once at the Marina, JoAnn drove us to the Fair for the Def Leapard concert. We were with Dina, Branden, Paul & Lonnie. After the concert we met up with Gary & JoAnn & Bradley. Bradley then had a great time on the rides at the Fair.

8/21 Stayed in the Marina in Escanaba and visited with friends and family.

8/22 We left Escanaba and went to Washington Island in convoy with Gary & JoAnn and Monte and Shawn (Monte's friend) to Detroit Harbor. I took the whole canvas off the boat for the first time and got sun burned on my body and face. At detroit harbor we warmed up sloppy joes and ate and then Monte, Shawn, and I went scuba diving over a Ship Wreck. The Louisianna is about a 275 foot long wooden freighter that sank in the harbor around the turn of the century after being blown into shore. All persons on board the ship survived. It was a great dive where we saw many many small mouth bass. Bradley also had fun snorkeling above the me as I swam around the bottom of the harbor. The water is so clear up there that Bradley could see me 20 feet down. After the dive we headed back to Menominee initially in 3 - 5 foot seas. After we passed chambers, the seas calmed to about 1-3 footers.

Origin Mystery Ship Marina Portage Fish Creek - Alibi Dock

Captain Joel A. Williams Passenger Mom, Dad, Taylor, Brad, Deanna

Trip Notes 9/17 We arrived in Menominee at 18:30 and could find no fuel. We filled up a 5 and a 6 gallon gas can and poured them into the tanks. While Dad and I were taking care of getting gas, Mom and Deanna were getting some groceries. We finally left the Marina around 8:00 PM and arrived in Fish Creek about an hour later. Seas were around 3 - 4 FT. In Fish Creek we docked at the Alibi Dock stern to stern with Gary and JoAnn. We ate poppy seed chicken made by Mom.

9/18 We got up and ate breakfast at Summertime. Gary and JoAnn left after breakfast to go back to Menominee. We gassed up at the Municipal dock in Fish Creek before taking off. We drove up to Ellison Bay and took a look around from the water. We then went to Sister Bay where we sat and fished a little and talked. We then went to Dana's Pizza place for supper. Our service was good but everyone else that went into the restaurant had service problems. We had a waitress from Poland that could barely speak english.

9/19 We left the Marina about 8:30 AM enroute to Mystery Ship Marina. We wanted to get back in time for Church and the Packer game. Seas were around 4' from the South. The 25 mile voyage took about 2 hours. We arrived at our home port around 10:30. My Mom and Dad went to Church and I stayed and cleaned the boat. I then went to mom and dads house to watch the Packer game. During the game it rained profusely. After the game I went back to the boat and discovered that I had left the forward hatch open and the v-birth was soaked. Mom and Dad took the cushions from the v-birth home with them and dried them with fans. They also dried the rest of the v-birth in the boat with fans.

Trip Notes The last trip of the year. In convoy with Deanna's Parents we left Mystery Ship Marina to go to the Pumpkin Festival in Egg Harbor but the Marina was full. We then went to Sister Bay. The marina was infested with Salmon for spawning. We saw several people catch them. We spent the night there and returned to Mystery Ship the next day after fueling and pumping out at the Menominee Marina.
