FREE SECURITY THINGEES
Hi, it's me again.
Nothing for sale on this page
I never miss a chance to put my picture on the web....haha
Scary stuff I think everybody has a right to know
Hidden on your computer are some files that contain all of the Web sites that you have ever visited. Every URL, and every Web page is listed there. You cannot delete them. Not only that but all of the email that has been sent or received through Outlook or Outlook Express is also logged. The file names and locations depend on what version of Internet Explorer you have. If you are running IE version 4.0 or above, the file name is "index.dat". If you are running or have ever run IE prior to version 4.0 there are two files. One is named Mm256.dat and the other is Mm2048.dat. Microsoft has not supplied an adequate explanation as to what these files are for or why they have been hidden so well.  According to Microsoft, these files are used to cache visited Web sites to help speed up the loading of Web pages in Internet Explorer. Obviously this cannot be the case because when you clear the Temporary Internet Files the "index.dat" files remain behind and continue to grow. If you delete or clear the Temporary Internet Files, there is absolutely no need for Windows to index the URL cache because those files no longer exist. But it does and they can't be deleted.
So, what's the point?
If your boss checks your computer and knows how (they usually do), they can get it. Those porn pop-ups, that are so annoying, as well as illegal sites you may have visited by mistake,....right, they're there. If you send your computer in for repair.....right again.....and, how this stuff will be used in the future.....anybody's guess.
This information can easily be retrieved by web sources for any number of reasons. Microsoft can get it (it's their idea), legal authorities can get it, companies that sell personal information can get it...  It is on your computer permanently..
This ain't a "what if" situation  - This stuff is there - on your computer - right now!
That's not to mention things like "keystroke recorders" that store, and send out, every thing you type: like passwords, social security numbers, credit card numbers, chat conversations, etc.
....well, maybe I'm exagerating just a tiny bit.... but, still
What can you do about it? - free stuff.
First, get a Firewall. There is a very good free one at: www.zonelabs.com. Look around on the site and you will find the one that is free for home use. I've used it for several years.
To keep viruses from coming in on your emails, get an anti-virus app (if you don't already have one). There is a very good free one at: www.grisoft.com. Again look around on the site to find the one that is free for home use. I use this one cause it's doesn't take over your computer like Norton and the others.
