The John Milton Society for the Blind in Canada ceased operations as of July 31, 2005. It was a largely volunteer organization, relying on donations to provide a ministry of Christian literature in alternative formats (Braille, large print, audio cassettes) to blind, visually-impaired and deafblind Canadians. See its mission statement below and click on the History link for further details.
At the final Annual general Meeting of the Society held on Monday April 25, 2005, the Rev. Dr. Donald Ray, President of the Society from 1986 to 1989, presented a retrospect of the great multitude of Executive Directors, office workers, volunteers, producers, narrators and donors who had contributed so much to the Society's work over the years. "My darkness has been filled with the light of intelligence, and behold, the
outer day-lit world was stumbling and groping in social blindness."

The following is the Mission Statement that governed the priorities and activities of the Society before it ceased operations.
"The John Milton Society for the Blind In Canada is a national ecumenical organization dedicated to providing Christian materials in alternative formats to blind, deafblind and visually impaired Canadians.
"By its very nature, following the principles of Helen Keller, its Founder, the Society is a source of materials of a spiritual nature and does not proselytize or represent any particular denomination. Rather, it cooperates as fully as possible with other organizations seeking to serve blind, deafblind and visually impaired Canadians."
