The Richard Frisbie Family Home Page

The Frisbie Lineage is as follows:
        I. RICHARD FRISBIE (4/1590-1635) was born in Paris, St. James, Clerkenwell, England. He married MARGAREAT EMERSON (1597-1635) on November 30, 1618 in St. James, Clerkenwell, London, England. RICHARD and his wife had emigrated to Virginia in 1620 and returned to London in 1625, where he is found in the registers of his home parish of St. James Clerkenwell until December 1634. He disappears from the church records after that, and it is quite possible that in 1635 he went again to America, joining the "Great Puritan Migration" of that year to New England. Going with him would have been, presumably, his wife MARGARET, his son EDWARD then aged about fourteen, and an infant daughter Jane.
There is no trace in the New England annals of Richard, his wife nor the daughter Jane, so we can only suppose that they died, either on the journey across the ocean, or soon after they reached America. There was much sickness on the ships; Governor Winthrop of Bay Colony mentions the arrival of the Elizabeth Dorcas in June 1634, which "having a long passage, and being hurt upon a rock in Scilly, and very ill victualled, she lost sixty passengers at sea," and the Abigail, which was ten weeks on the way from England and reached Boston with smallpox aboard. Many of the emigrants, debilitated by the long sea journey, "came sick on shore" and, without adequate protection against the bitter New England weather, died miserably during their first winter. Winthrop says: "The poorer sort of people (who lay long in tents) were much afflicted with the scurvy, and many died, especially at Boston and Charlestown."
It is not surprising that no trace of the Frisby family can be found in the New England annals for in the confusion surrounding the arrival of the crowded ships no systematic record was maintained of those who lived, let alone those who died. Nearly 20,000 persons emigrated to New England between 1628 and 1640, about 5,000 of them in the single year 1635, and we know the names of only a quarter of them. Thus the lack of any reference to the family in the existing records is not necessarily proof that they did not come to New England; often it is difficult to establish the arrival date of a settler who spent the remainder of his life in America and raised a family here. We can not say for certain that this is when and how Edward Frisbie reached Connecticut, but he certainly arrived somehow, and this reconstruction is historically possible and fits the few facts that we know about him and his family.
        They had eleven children:
        1. Mary Frisbie (b. 1619) was Christened on November 7, 1619 in St. James, Clerkenwell, London, England.
        2. EDWARD FRISBIE (1620-5/10/1690) was born in St. James, Clerkenwell, London, England and died in Branford, New Haven, Connecticut. Nothing certain is known of EDWARD FRISBIE's origin, but there is the strong possibility that he was born in Virginia Colony about 1621. So we now have one place source he was born in England and another in Virginia. He married HANNAH CULPEPPER (1628-1683) in 1649 in Branford, New Haven, Connecticut. You may read more about the CULPEPPER family on their own page. Just follow the link at the bottom of the page.
EDWARD FRISBIE and HANNAH CULPEPPER had eleven children:
        21. John Frisbie (7/17/1650-3/26/1694) was born and died in Branford, New Haven, Connecticut.
        22. Edward Frisbie (6/11/1652-5/10/1690) was born and died in Branford, New Haven, Connecticut.
        23. Samuel Frisbie (10/18/1654-11/17/1681) was born and died in Branford, New Haven, Connecticut.
        24. BENONI FRISBIE (1656-11/1700) was born and died in Branford, New Haven, Connecticut. He married HANNAH ROSE (b. 3/15/1676) in 1678. You may read more about the ROSE family on their own page. Just follow the link at the bottom of the page.
BENONI FRISBIE is listed as #5 in the 1926 Genealogy, and his children are listed as nos. 23 and 24. In both genealogies he is shown as the third child, born in 1654, but his birth date, corrected from the Branford Town Records, is properly 1656, which makes him the fourth child in the family.
We know nothing of BENONI's history except that he married HANNAH ROSE, daughter of JOHN ROSE Sr. The date of the marriage is not known, but it was probably about 1678, inasmuch as their first child was born in January 1679/80. Double dates are shown frequently in the early years of the American colonies.
BENONI inherited a considerable portion of his father's lands. Enumerated in EDWARD's will the items were: two acres of pasture in the Mill Quarter, the cow meadow at Indian Neck, two acres of Beaver Swamp, two acres of meadow at Scotch Cap, four acres at Hopyard Plain, two acres of upland at Knocker's Hollow, and nine acres of cow pasture land north of Thomas Wheadon's swamp.
BENONI also received the middle one of the three houses owned by Edward and facing on Branford Green, with two acres of land. On this lot there was a well of exceptionally fine water, and in his will EDWARD expressly reserves "the use of the well which is in BENONI his lot for those that shall live on either of my home lots so long as any of the Frisbyes or any of their heirs shall live thereon."
The well appears as "Benoni's Well" on the plat of the village of 1699, and interestingly enough, the office of the Branford Water Company now stand on the property. In recent years the belief has arisen that the well with a timber well-head now standing on the Hearthstone property was "Benoni's Well", but this is not the case; BENONI apparently never lived at Hearthstone.
BENONI died in 1700, but the date of his wife's death is not known. Inasmuch as they had only two children, in an era when large families were usual, it is likely that Hannah died not too long after the birth of her second child. She is mentioned in her father's will of 1683. Jacobus, quoting Branford Church Records for 1688 has: "Ye same time adjointed Hannah Frisby", and he identifies this Hannah as the wife of Benoni.
BENONI FRISBIE and HANNAH ROSE had two children:
        241. BENJAMIN FRISBIE (1/24/1672/79-9/10/1724) was born in Branford, New Haven, Connecticut. He married ELIZABETH BERBERRY in 1703. They had eight children:

2425. Deborah Frisbie (b. 4/15/1712) was born in Branford, New Haven, Connecticut.
Ebenezer then married Joanna Baldwin Rose (b. 5/18/1686) was born in Guilford, Connecticut. They were married on September 13, 1715 in Branford Connecticut. They had six children:
2426. Elisha Frisbie (b. 8/20/1716) was born in Branford, Connecticut.

2429b. Amos Frisbie (b. 1/17/1728/29) was born in Branford, Connecticut.
There is some confusion as to the identity of his third wife. The 1926 Genealogy identified her as Hannah Abbott, daughter of Joseph Abbott, who was possibly the son of a Robert Abbott, and says: "This Joseph Abbott had a son Joseph who married April 4, 1730, Hannah Marks, whom the tradition referred to below seems to identify with Anna Marks, the mother of Rachel Levi [who married Ebenezer's son, Elisha. They had a daughter Hannah, who was born April 14, 1741. Which Hannah, if either, was the third wife of Ebenezer (24) is not clear.. There is a tradition in the family that Ebenezer Frisbie, father of Elisha married Anna, or Hannah Marks, the mother of Rachel Levi."
The 1964 Genealogy omits the child Amos and the third marriage.
