Mrs. Sobol-Halperin Melody Lee January 22, 2007 Eng 316-04 Satan behind Music There are certain people who believe that some music, especially rock music send satanic messages to the listeners and influence their thoughts and actions. They blame music for people’s inappropriate lifestyles and behaviors. But can this be a fact? Does rock music make listeners act in a particular way? Rock and roll was first introduced in the 1960s. The rise in rock and roll gave away the belief that this genre of music was linked to the worship of Satan. This was because rock music was so different compared to other genres of music such as country, jazz, and blues, the new type of music intimidated the world. This satanic controversy was an accusation against some rock bands such as; Led Zeppelin, Metallica, AC/DC, etc., with their allegiance with the devil because of their unintended back masking or backward messaging. The argument raged dramatically in the late 70s and early 80s when religious fundamentalists claimed that Satan possessed the minds of singers, causing them to insert messages into their albums. There is the fact that some music when played backwards you can hear subliminal messages that are apparently sent intentionally by the artist to serve Satan. This is called back masking, a form of brainwashing, according to some people. As ludicrous and absurd that may sound, this was a widespread belief that many held. Such rock bands as Led Zeppelin, Metallica, AC/DC, and many others were accused of sending messages from Lucifer to the youth society. The truth is if you listen carefully enough, a word that may sound like “Satan” would appear in just about any music that was played backwards. Another fact, according to specialists who have done research on reverse speech, such as psychologists, psychiatrists, and advertising experts, “hidden messages are generally ineffective”. Satanism is actually the fastest growing subculture in America and is practiced mostly by teenagers. Some people do believe that it is because the average teen listens to 6 hours of rock music per day. Do you think that it is already affecting your mind when you are listening to rock music? Another example of how society blames rock music is when Marilyn Manson’s music was accused of being the influence behind the horrendous school massacre, the Columbine incident. Many link violence with media, television and computer games, which is probably the reason why people targeted his music. There is the possibility that some people in the world who devote their lives to Satan and in their mind believe their purpose in life is to do a major massacre but it is highly unlikely. So, technically, rock music should not be the cause of why people would act in strange and devilish ways. Why do we continue making false claims? Our society is based on “fear and consumption” which is the reason we make false accusations and that is something that will never change.
