Microbes exist all over the planet. They can adapt and multiply faster than we can, and like they say, you can't win them all. A great pandemic is coming... We know that... We just don't know when. Of course, serious epidemics are not really unusual. Plague and pestilence appear throughout the bible. The Black Plague, The Plague of Justinian, Spanish Flu, AIDS, malaria, smallpox, swine and avian flus. Today, CDC and WHO scientists claim that a bird flu pandemic ( H5N1 ) is inevitable. At least one Russian scientist claims it might kill a billion people. This book describes what would happen during a great pandemic, and how humanity might respond.

Synopsis
The tale begins with the end of the dinosaurs, as the last of the great reptiles falls victim to a monstrous virus. The remains of the beast are entombed in an ancient earthquake, preserving the virus in a region that will eventually become an Arctic wasteland. Fifty thousand years later an asteroid crashes into the Yucatan peninsula, providing the accepted explanation of the dinosaur extinction event. Accepted, but not certain...

Fast forward sixty five million years, to the year 2025, when a Chinese research team recovers the ancient bones. They have no idea what lurks inside the find, and the organism escapes. The virus itself is the progenitor of the rhabdovirus family, distantly related to the rabies virus, but even more lethal than that dread disease. Worse yet, the virus bonds tightly with nitrogen atoms, and nitrogen makes up almost 80% of our atmosphere. The research workers are the first victims of the disease, a disease that will soon be called "Chailin fever". Once it enters the atmosphere it spreads quickly, carried not only on the wind, but by people traveling on planes, trains, and automobiles. A microscopic nightmare, a proven planet killer, has been reborn.
At first the politicians and the media pay no attention to the crisis in China, but as a local epidemic grows into a global pandemic, one that could mean apocalypse and the extinction of humanity, they spring into action. Unfortunately, much of that action consists of hiding the truth from the public. World leaders are convinced the disease is some sort of biological attack, and they waste time and resources trying to identify the culprit. The spread of the virus accelerates as the number of victims grows.
The scientific and medical communities struggle mightily to find a way to defeat the tiny monster, but they are unsuccessful. The virus rides on the swirling winds, an organism that kills 99.998% of the people it infects. A natural catastrophe rapidly redefines life on planet Earth. The virus is an equal opportunity destroyer, as deadly to reptiles and birds as it is to mammals. Hard core environmentalists initially claim the disease is just Mother Nature's way of cleansing herself, right up until the moment they realize that they are not going to be immune to this 'therapy'. Religious leaders try to prepare their flocks for the coming of the Lord. Survivalists just have a field day.
Aftermath... The summer of 2025 has ended. Life on the surface of the planet has been decimated, yet life goes on. The species called homo sapiens has survived the plague, but society and technology have been utterly destroyed. The post apocalyptic world has its own set of challenges, but in many ways it is an idyllic world. As the centuries pass humanity begins rebuilding society. In many ways it is a hopeful rebirth, but it is certainly not a perfect one, as it includes many things best left in the past.
