Biography

James Campbell is one of Chicago’s leading freelance trombonists, performing with all the Chicago area orchestras including the Chicago Symphony, Lyric Opera, Music of the Baroque, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Ravinia Festival Orchestra and the Elgin Symphony. He has previously held positions as lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2003-04) and acting principal trombone of the Tasmanian Symphony in Australia (2001). Currently he is on faculty at the Music Institute of Chicago. An avid chamber musician, James has performed with the Chicago Chamber Musicians and is a former member of the Wisconsin Brass Quintet. As a soloist he has won many competitions including the Australian Trombone Competition and Adelaide Brass Competition. James studied with Michael Mulcahy at Northwestern University and has studied privately with Jay Friedman, Charles Vernon, Joseph Alessi, Nitzan Haroz and Steven Witzer. Other career highlights include performing at the Grand Teton Music Festival and a Fellowship to the Tanglewood Music Festival.
