In Their Own Words – The Game of Go

Rear Admiral A.J. Chegwidden

By Pat (SSbpMN@aol.com)

The day started off in normal fashion. A distress call and a problem dumped in my lap. Seems a Webb operation has hit the fan. Why am I not surprised?

I sent for Commander Rabb, Major Mackenzie and Lieutenant Roberts and got two out of three. I should have quit while I was ahead. Rabb informed me the Major was held up on a court martial case. A fact contradicted by the Major herself a moment later. Of course if I can't get my Yeoman to follow orders, how do I expect my two senior officers to do so? At the same time, I like seeing the loyalty toward each other that they display. There's a devotion forming there.

The mess in Colombia is dilemma I did not need right now. I've got pressure from all sides here. And that Mr. Rabb is not pleased he will be working with Mr. Webb is the least of my worries.

Plus I had to be clear that they were to investigate the circumstances; though my so called softer side came through and I assured the Major if all they returned with was a report, I would not consider their mission to be a success. I understand fully the Marine code of not leaving men behind, dead or alive. At the same time I cannot let that be my only consideration. There are political forces at work here; plus our stance fighting the drug war in Colombia is tenuous at best.

It was not without trepidation that I sent them off. As long as I've been in the Navy, I have not ever grown accustomed to sending my people in to a dangerous situation. God, please look after them.
