Song Writing Tip:

There’s nothing wrong with writing a song that has only 3 basic chords (there are plenty of new 3 chord songs coming out all the time). If you really want something creative and unique…try to think of something in your head while driving or at work or just sitting. Take the time to write it down in a way you’ll be able to remember later.I know from experience that if you wait until later to write it down, you probably won’t remember the way it goes.  (They might be chords you’ve never used together before, but that doesn’t matter) The next chance you get, pick up your guitar and piece together what the correct chords for the song are and write them down.

Don’t worry about writing the next big hit, or coming up with something to impress someone else. If you write songs you really like and you enjoy what you’ve written, chances are others will too---!
Although the modern trend in songs is to juxtapose strange chords together, the basic pattern for finding chords that fit the key you're writing in still applies.

FOR MAJOR KEYS:

I - ii - iii - IV - V - iv - viidim

The capital letters are Major chords, lower case letters are Minor chords.
For example, in the key of C, the chords used in the key would be:

C - Dm - Em - F - G - Am - Bdim, and then up to C again.

Use this pattern for finding chords which fit the key you're writing in.

FOR MINOR KEYS

i - iidim - III - iv - v - VI - VII -
