Good luck on your first day.”
“Thanks Nick,” Roz beamed, “I’m really excited.”
“Good, good, you’ll be fine.”
She smiled at him again and then went off to meet DS Vik Singh who was looking after her during her attachment to CID.
“She’s only been here five minutes and she’s already on her way to CID.” Nick watched her leave the canteen with a bounce in her step.
“Yes, that’s exactly the sort of person we need employed now within The Met.” Tony announced imitating Tom Chandler. Nick smiled and then got back to his evening refs.

As Roz knocked on the Sergeant’s office where she had arranged to Sigh, she felt as if she was disturbing something. She did not think she’d ever heard Sergeant Gilmore laugh before but was certain he was now.
Damn she thought as Vik came out he got here before me. Then changed her mind. At least he won’t think I’m overkeen.
She knew that Danny and Mickey had thought that from when she had last worked with CID.
“Yeah see you later.” Vik called back to Gilmore and then closed the door. “OK I’ll tell you what we’re doing a the moment, then we can go and make an arrest.”
“Already?”
“Yeah, there’s an operation set up for tonight.”
“Yes Sarge.” Roz obediently followed him up to CID.

* * *

“See that man there?” Vik tapped the television monitor with his biro above the head of a man wearing a black baseball cap who seemed to be looking straight into camera. The small brown package he held tightly in both hands looked ominous.
“Yes Guv.”
“That’s Sam Rogers, nasty bit of work, used to beat his family up when he was younger, they got a restraining order, so he moved onto ‘bigger’ things.”
“Like drugs?”
Vik nodded and tapped the package on the screen. “Never been able to get enough evidence before, but he wasn’t as careful this time, luckily for us.” He took the video out and slid it back into the slipcase. “Tonight he’ll be in the Badger and Arms, when he comes out we’ll be waiting, Kate and Mickey will be inside, Danny and Paul will be around the back incase he tries to make a run for it.”
“Ok Guv.”
“Shall we go then?” The other members of CID involved had gathered behind them and Alex Cullen had emerged from his office to hear the plan of events. There were brief nods from all gathered then they left to get their vehicles on the road.

* * *

“What do you think about Roz joining CID?” Mickey asked Kate as he steered the dark blue Ford Focus around the corner and shifted gear, trying to keep up with Vik Singh who seemed to be racing through the traffic.
“She hasn’t actually joined yet.”
“Yeah but think about how long she’s been in the police, it took he a year to get into CID.”
“Things change Mickey.” Kate glanced at the time, 20:07 being the beginning of December it was almost pitch black, the broken street lights helped to emphasise this, she hoped that they would get there soon.

* * *

“He’s heading for the door Guv.” Kate’s voice crackled over the radio.
“Received.” Vik put the radio down and then exited the car, Roz walked next to him, shivering in the frosty conditions, they’d had to wait over an hour after arriving until Sam had downed his last drink and decided to leave. The pub door opened as Vik and Roz reached the bottom of the steps leading up to the entrance. Sam walked out, cigarette in one hand and mobile phone in the other, he shouted some obscenities into it, then snapped it shut and shuffled it angrily into his pocket. Roz was surprised at his height, there had been no one else on the video to compare him with but up close she could see that he was only a little bit taller than she was. She wandered how he scared other big time criminals when he had to look up to them.
“Sam Rogers?” Vik advanced towards him showing his warrant card. Sam turned back towards the pub only to find that his escape route had been blocked by Mickey and Kate, Roz took chase as Sam ran in the only direction he thought not to be covered by the CID officers. Vik smiled realising Sam must of thought the two large men walking into the pub were police as well which cut off the path to Sam’s car. His smile did not last for long.

* * *

Roz caught up with Sam quickly and tried to stop him running. She got a good grip on his arm.
“I’m arresting…”
“I doubt that very much.” He turned around and pulled Roz close to him so she was facing Vik. Sam had an arm around her waist and a gun pushed towards her temple. Mickey, who had been chasing behind her, came to a sudden stop a few feet away.
“Back off.”
Mickey did as he was told and walked backwards slowly.
“Come on, this is really unnecessary Sam, put the gun down,” Vik tried to reason with him, “ We want to speak to you in connection with a drug case we’re investigating.” He started to walk forwards to get in front of Mickey who was slyly adjusting his radio behind his back so everything could be heard by CAD.
“Stay where you are.” Vik stopped walking and looked into Roz’s wide eyes, she stared back at him for help but did not say anything, she was on the edge of hyperventilating, a silent tear ran down her left cheek.

* * *

Watching from the shadows Paul quietly informed Danny what was going on. Danny had already phoned Chandler and had arranged for an ARV to approach silently and without lights to the back of the pub where they were hiding. They had also stopped three cars from driving around the pub, Paul felt lucky Sam Roger’s favourite pub was not located in a busier area.

* * *

“I didn’t do nuffin’ why can’t you pigs jus’ leave me alone?”
“Ok, look, we believe you we just wanted to ask you a few questions and then you can go. However if you pull that trigger, you’ll be on a murder trial, there are lots of witnesses here Sam.” Vik tried to humor and threaten the man simultaneously, he hoped it would work. There was a loud clatter, amplified by the silence, as Mickey dropped his radio. Sam jumped at the unexpected noise hitting the gun hard against Roz’s forehead causing her to give a little yelp.
“What was that?”

* * *

Danny and Paul moved further back letting SO19 take their positions around the pub. They watched as Sam, still tightly holding Roz, began to start shouting at Mickey. They looked slightly surprised when Mickey started to shout back.
“He’s way out of line, it’s getting dangerous out there.” Danny murmured, his statement was proved correct when Sam took the gun away from a relieved Roz to point it towards Mickey.

* * *

Although they had only had eye contact for a few seconds, Mickey felt he had been standing there staring at the other man for hours. He looked into the gun, he had never been shot or seriously injured before and didn’t want to start now. Mickey jumped as he heard the gun fire, a flock of pigeons in the grass nearby took off creating a sudden gust of cold air which blasted over him stiffening his spine. He felt a feeling of completion but there was no pain. He jerked his head back up quickly. Sam gazed fixatedly back at him, a look of shock and terror masked his features. The gun dropped towards the concrete in slow motion. Sam dropped to his knees clutching hischest, blood spilled through his fingers and dribbled over the ground splattering over his gun. Kate, and Mickey now recovered, ran over to the stricken man.

* * *

Vik found Roz a few yards away her pretty purple top dotted in the dark red blood of her attacker. She returned his gentle comforting hug and tried to compose herself again.
“Thanks Sarge.” She sniffled and looked up at him with a brave smile.

* * *

In the shadows Smiffy smiled to himself, he had shot the right guy this time, he was glad Roz hadn’t moved just as he fired, he hated it when that happened.

* * *

As much as he was enjoying it, Vik broke away from the kiss.
“Guv?” She looked up at him, confused and too embarrased to say his name.
“Come on, I think we should get back to the station.”

* * *

Nick Klein grabbed a CD out of his locker and dropped it in his bag so he could have it on in the car as he drove home. He needed the music tonight to keep his mind from straying onto the item of juicy gossip about Roz with Vik Singh. He’d just heard Mickey Webb shouting off about it in the canteen. He had left with Sgt Gilmore who had been muttering something about ‘that detective’s tactlessness.”
“Night Nick.” Speak of the devil.
“What happened to you?” He queried taking in the blood splattered clothing and blotchy face.
“We arrested Rogers,” Roz sighed and looked at the floor,”I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Well...” The floor became his focus point as he saw Vik at the coffee machine, “...I’ve got to go.”
He brushed past her not knowing what else to say. He noticed Vik look acknowledge Roz and then make a speedy getaway to the CID office.

* * *

After collecting all the stuff and changing into her spare clothes Roz had decided to wait for Vik Singh. The rest of CID had already gone past, knowing how it felt to be held a hostage, Kate had asked her if she was OK, that was half an hour ago.
“Sam.” She called out going back into Sunhill’s reception.
“Yes Roz.” He smiled cheerily.
“Have you seen Vik Singh anywhere?”
“He went with Sgt. Gilmore a while ago. Something about gardening?” Sam replied innocently.
“Oh.” The smile left her face. Gilmore? Come to think about it he had said he’d be ‘busy’ tonight.
