"NOW OR BEEN"
For whatever this is worth,  it expresses
some of my frustration with the current tone
of the American political scene.

Are you now, or have you been, a communist,
A devotee of vi'lent overthrow?
Are you now, or have you been, a
socialist?
There really is no difference, you know!

Chorus:  Are you now?  We need somebody to loathe!
Have you been?  We need somebody to loathe!

Are you now, or have you been, an
atheist,
Unfit to be our nation's citizen?
Godless, evil, never to be trusted, and
No better than a Unitarian?

Chorus:

Are you now, or have you been, a
liberal,
Flip-flopping, with no stable point of view?
Constantly a bother to the NRA,
Who wants Big Brother to take care of you?

Chorus:

Are you now, or have you been, a
humanist,
With your own version of the golden rule?
But, I have just slipped into redundancy;
We covered
atheists back in verse two!

Chorus:

Are you now, or have you been,
too tolerant.
Of gender, varied in identity?
Tearing down the tradition of family,
And bringing God's wrath on society?

Chorus:

Are you now, or have you been,
conservative,
Addicted to unbridled wealth and greed?
Faithful to amendment number two, as e'er
A zealot could be, to a book or creed?

Chorus:

Are you now, and will you be, a
listener,
Who seeks to find the path to common ground,
Feeling that the world's too small, and life's too short,
To spend time singing a divisive song?

Are you now?  We need somebody to
love!
Will you be?  We need somebody to
love!
