Gourry first met Lina in the forest as she was headed for Atlas City and Dragon Fang got in her way. He defeated the gang for her, thinking that she's some sort of damesel in distress. However, when he got to take a good look at her, he realized that she is just "a little girl" and told her that he'd better take her home. Lina told him that she's headed for Atlas and so he began to tag along with her ever since then.

He has an appetite as big as Lina's, but here is his outstanding trait: dumb. Of course, he's also being called stupid, idiot, ...and the most famous of all, jellyfish-brains. If you're crazy enough, you might even think that he has ADHD otherwise known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ;p
Of course, many of you might agree that he is really like that, but don't worry, when it comes to things like feelings or sensitivity, count on him to be the smartest... well, at least... if not that smart... ;_;

On Lina Inverse, he really swore to be her protector. In Filipino dub (Filipino is my native tongue), he even said, "Ako ang iyong Prince Charming!" ("I am your Prince Charming!")...well anyway, that's just a weird adlib. Remember the bonfire scene in Slayers Next when they were in the temple of the Claire Bible (is that how you refer to the place?), he even told her that he plans to be with her for life. That made her blush. ^^

On Sylpheel Nels Laada, he's usually like a big brother towards her. She really has this big crush on her but since he doesn't seem to notice and pays more attention to Lina, she knew she had to let go of Gourry.

Gourry owns the Hikari no Ken (The Sword of Light) which was handed down in his family for generations. Its real name is Golnova and it's one of the weapons of Dark Star Dogradigudo... not to mention, it's also one of the Lost Ships in Hajime Kanzaka's other cool creation, Lost Universe...
Being a swordsman, he is really good at it, in fact, his skills are better than Sherra's (Sherra is Grausherra's general, in case you're a blur) and that helped in contributing to her downfall. Anyway, he had learned to master the special ability to use the Hikari no ken, since it gets energy from its user and would usually take form of a glowing blade of light, much like the Light Saber in Star Wars.

At the end of the novels, (Novel #15 The Demon Slayers), Lina asked him where he wants to go next and he replies that they go to Zefielia, Lina's hometown.
Actually, there are lots of differences in the novels, manga and the anime when it comes to Gourry. I don't remember so well if it's in the manga or novels, but Gourry's supposed to play the role of a handsome blonde guy, which can make Lina fall for him but when he speaks up about something, Lina loses that attraction (if you know what I mean...). While in the anime, his characterization isn't presented like that. It would somewhat show that Gourry has this big importance and significance to the series when it comes to Lina.
Gourry, indeed, is very tall, maybe about 6 feet or taller...

In the First Movie of Slayers (Slayers Perfect), there was this guy named Rowdy Gabriel. You might have guessed that he really married the elf named Mellyroon, but it is highly impossible because when Rowdy gets older, Mellyroon would still be a child...(Hajime Kanzaka-sama explained that himself... ). Therefore, Rowdy must have married a human girl, so Gourry is not a half-elf, half-human guy.
