Establishing the identity of fired ammunition with the suspect firearm is helpful in linking the crime with the weapon and consequently with the criminal. To obviate the linkage, the criminals often attempt to destroy the firearm evidence. They may tamper/replace the firing pin, may make the gun unserviceable, may break/destroy the gun and so on. Besides, they also resort to locally made, imitation and improvised firearms to commit heinous crimes especially in developing countries where law for possession of firearm is very stringent. Thus, one is often confronted with a variety of unusual exhibits. While examining thousands of firearm cases I have also come across a variety of unusual, ambiguous and misleading exhibits warranting deviation from usual methods of examination.
