THE CHILDERS AND CHILDRESS
CIVIL WAR
RESEARCH CENTER

I heard my brothers call... distant, from the grave...
it called like the long roll...
summoning us to a place and time we had nearly forgotten...
We will not turn away...
Was it really so long ago?
I will be as faithful in death as he was in life and I will remember...
not because someone told me that I should,
but because I could be no other way and he would do this for me.
Ever faithful and evergreen...
Only those who die young... may remain that way forever.
They live only because I refuse to let them die.

One hundred and fourty some years ago, our Childers/Childress forefathers
heard the the call to defend their homeland. Hundreds of our
family answered the  call, as they
have in every war since the founding of our nation.
Yet, this was a different war. A war not against a
foreign invader, or to defend the freedoms of  another nation.
This was a war of brother against brother, north fighting south.
It has many names, the war of the rebellion, the war for southern independence
the war against northern aggression, or the most common the Civil War.
More American's would die in this war that any other war, before or since.
Every family across our nation would be affected, our's was one of them.
