Dax's wrist protectors are corded rather than vacuum formed. To create
the corded effect, use the same pattern pieces as in the Making Scratch page, but
also create felt lining. To make the cording, cut out long strips of satin, or use
satin ribbon, and cut a piece of cord a few inches longer than where you plan
to apply it. Grapgic 3a.jpg

Put the zipper foot onto your sewing machine, and create casings like
those in the graphic.Graphic 3b.jpg

Next you sew the casings between the pattern pieces as shown in the
graphic.  Graphic 3c.jpg

When you have sewn all the panels together with the casings in
between. Sew up the lining, and then place the cording between the
lining and the outer panels. Graphic 3d.jpg

When you have finished sewing all the cording in place, sew the lining
to the outer pattern seems as shown in the graphic.  Graphic 3e.jpg

At this point you turn the lining to the inside and you sew the lining to
the inner seams of the cording. Remember you can buy pre-made
cording already attached to satin cord. The cording found for upholstery
will give you a very stiff effect, whereas the cording for regular clothing
will give the structure some body but will not be as stiff as the other. By
choosing your own cord, you can make it as stiff or as pliable as you
wish.

This makes a comfortable, lightweight, alternative to the heavy plastic
wrist protectors. By using various fabrics, patterns on the fabric, and
possibly fur or fake fur for a different look. Metallic tapestry fabrics would
be appropriate, as would some heavy satin, or whatever complements
your costume. Even if you must use vinyl, you can make it more
interesting by choosing textured vinyl, or leathers. You can layer them
for visual interest.
