Meaningful Concepts I learned in Comp 14
By Sylvia Fischer

Before I took this class I had no idea I would learn the things I did.  The extent of my internet experience was e-mail and surfing the web once in a while which really is only a fraction of the items that are on the internet.  I learned detailed information about how to be more in control of my computer.  The four most important things I learned was how to download software, e-mail accounts, search engines and create web pages.
I was able to download virus protection software and other software which protects my computer from various viruses and also protects my privacy.  There is all sorts of free download able material on the internet.  Many sites give you a nibble and give you free material up to a point and once you're hooked they offer more for a price.  For instance one of the web sites that provides information about how to create web pages the first 4-5 lessons are free and if you want to learn more there is a cost involved.  I can use much of this information in my job since there are many sites that involve health and wellness which is my field.
I also learned more detailed information about e-mail accounts and how to subscribe to various accounts for free.  I liked learning how to create various folders for all the junk mail that comes through and being able to delete the spam which also saves me time.  At work I am able to e-mail my fellow nurses and send forms and other information over the internet which also saves time.  I have expanded my vocabulary to include words like list serve, up load, server.
I have learned about various search engines that are available especially to students.  The search engines are great tools to use when trying to find any subject that one can think of.  I know that Google is the most popular and I like it now that I know about it and it provides me with the most thorough results than any other.  At work I am able to research different medical defects since I work with children who come in with various defects especially rare defects.
The most exciting concept that I have learned is how to create my own web page the hard way without a web page editor.  It takes a lot of forethought to create a web page that will not only be pleasing to the eye but also make sense and include all the items it needs to especially if it's a business.  It was fun to add images also.  I think I will be able to use this in my employment especially because I can create my own web site to include valuable information for new school nurses which will be helpful to them and even provide links to other resources.  This will save time and make them more productive in their schools.  I have recently been asked if I would be part of a pilot program that will help nurses to access information from a computer and do other things that our job requires.  I think I am able to contribute some valuable information to my job from the things I have learned in this class.
