Organized at Richmond and Indianapolis, Ind., and mustered in September 3, 1862. Ordered to Covington, Ky.,
September 8, and duty in the defenses of Covington, Ky., and Cincinnati, Ohio, during Kirby Smith's threatened attack on
Cincinnati. Moved to point Pleasant, W.Va., October 1. Attached to 3d Brigade, Kanawha Division, District of West
Virginia, Dept. of Ohio, to November, 1862. District of Eastern Kentucky. Dept. of Ohio, to February 18, 1863. 2d
Brigade, Baird's 3d Division, Army of Kentucky, Dept. Ohio, February, 1863. Baird's Division, Franklin, Tenn., Dept. of
the Cumberland, to June, 1863. 1st Division, Reserve Corps, Dept. of the Cumberland, to October, 1863. 2d Brigade,
1st Division, 4th Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland, to August, 1864. 3d Brigade, 1st Division, 4th Army Corps, to
June, 1865.
 
SERVICE.--Moved from Point Pleasant, W.Va., to Guyandotte October 13, 1862, and duty there till November 14.
Ordered to Kentucky November 14. Duty at Catlettsburg and Cassville, Ky., till February 7, 1863. Moved to Nashville,
Tenn., February 7-20, thence to Franklin, Tenn., March 5, and duty there till June 3. Pursuit of Van Dorn March 9-12.

Regiment lost during service 5 Officers and 82 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 145 Enlisted
men by disease. Total 234.

The 84th Indiana was formed to service as the Safety Unit of the Cumberland Guard.
