Linguistic Intelligence

PEOPLE from every culture possess the ability to utilize language. While some have only the most basic level of proficiency, others have mastered multiple languages with grace and ease.

When a person displays highly developed auditory skills, enjoys playing with the sounds of language, speaking, storytelling, thinks in words, is a good speller, has a good memory, loves reading and writing, they are demonstrating linguistic intelligence. Politicians, playwrights, editors are all lingustically intelligent.

For years, researchers have recognized the connection between language development and the brain. Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence research shows how even young children and deaf individuals will begin to develop their own unique language when they are not offered an alternative. A person's ability to construct and comprehend language may vary, but as a cognitive ability, it is universal.
