Dear Stephanie,
I hope that everyone has been enjoying a
safe and relaxing summer. It has been a
pleasure to work with the Board of Directors for
the past couple of months. The Board is
enthusiastic about offering fresh and timely
professional development hours, implementing
improvements to the newsletter and website,
increasing member participation at events, and
preparation of the annual yearbook. The
yearbooks should be going out to members later
in September. The Board is in the
process of finalizing a solid schedule of
programs for this next year. Some of the
events we are organizing include a full day
modular seminar program on A/P and A/R, an
international accounting round-table, and an
excellent 4-hour tax review presented by IMA
chapter Past-President Toni Spina. The
first meeting is tentatively scheduled to be a
student night in October. The final
schedule will be communicated
soon. Throughout its history, the IMA has
understood the importance of student outreach
and mentoring. We continue that
tradition this year, participating in several
on-campus career fairs, hosting a student night,
and presenting a CMA overview
program. We are also very excited to be
participating in Digital Rochester's Get
Connected event at Village Gate Square on
Tuesday September 9. Read more in the
Featured Article of this newsletter! I
encourage everyone to forward this newsletter to
at least one other person that may benefit from
being an IMA member or learning more about the
CMA program. Feedback, comments and
questions are welcome, so please feel free to
contact me or any board
member. Regards, David
Alkins President, IMA Rochester

Interview
Corner
You have been invited to an interview
because the hiring manager believes you may be a
good match for the job opening. The interview is
used to determine whether or not you are
qualified for the position, motivated to do the
job, and the right fit. As the job seeker, you
should make use of this time to determine
whether you can be successful in the available
position and whether the company will give you
the opportunity for professional growth and
career development. This column will focus on
different tips each month for
interviewing.
Interview Do's:
- Arrive on time or a few minutes early.
- Greet the interviewer by last name if you
are sure of the pronunciation. If not, ask the
employer to repeat it.
- Project energy and enthusiasm. Smile and
shake hands firmly.
- Wait until you're offered a chair before
sitting. Sit upright, look alert and interested
at all times. Listen carefully and respond
succinctly and articulately.
- Look the hiring manager in the eye while
speaking.
- Early in the meeting, try to get the
interviewer to describe the job and the duties
to you so you can focus your responses on your
background, skills and accomplishments that
relate to the position.
- Be sincere and truthful while focusing on
communicating your specific professional
achievements that relate to the accounting or
finance job opening.
