Introduction:

Kilayur was also known as AYUR, meaning sheppards settlement. Kilayur village is located in the south west of the present town. The boundary for Kilayur stars from the west end of the Ilayangudi Lake and Ilayangudi Higher Secondary School. Kialyaur has neighbouring villages of Thiruvallur, Malayur etc.

First Settlement:

The first settlement in Kilayur started early 16th Century. Section of Muslims were first settled near Ambalakaran Oorani in the south side of the town. Later they were shifted to the present Kilayur village.

Manikatti Muthu Thirulandi Thevar family is known as the first family of Kilayur. When he converted to Islam most of the settlers embrased Islam. The present Manikatti family is decended from his roots.

People & Trade:

Kilayur village was dominated by Muslim community but some non-muslim brothern like Konars, Thevars & Adi Dravidars were too living in the outskirt of this village. Overseas trade was the major source of income for the people.

The people from Kilayur too concentrated in Malaysia since 19th Century. The chief of Police (IG) of Penang city was from Kilayur during 1960 and 70. Presently Kilayur people are videly living in the Gulf States too.

Mosques:

The first mosque in Kilayur was constructed during 1870. Now during 1996 new mosque was constructed by the efforts of Mr. Mahboob Ali, who is working in Dubai, with the financial assistance of his Gulf sponsor.

Jalli Kattu:

Kilayur was very famous for the Jalli Kattu & Manju Virattu, the ancient Tamil courageous entertainment festivals. Every year during Pongal season Manju Virattu is being conducted in Kilayur. All neighbouring villagers would be participating with their Bullock and Ox in this festival.
