Starr stared out of the car window, bored out of her mind. She couldn’t hear the radio that was blaring out, due to interference, and the tape deck in the old car they had borrowed chewed all the tapes up. They didn’t have a CD player in the car either, so the car was filled with the radio’s static, and her little brothers complaints.

“But muuuuum, I need the Jon and I need it now” he whined again. Starr sighed and shifted in her seat, wondering if marshmallows would give her some peace by acting as earphones.
“Okay, Hun, there’s not long to go now. Starr, don’t look so put out, I thought you wanted to live here”
“I do, but well, the area’s bigger than I thought it would be, I thought we’d be there by now. I’m so bored, I just want to get there!”
            “Well, we’ll be there soon”

Starr sighed again, and went back to attempting to drown out the noises, which didn’t work too well, or last too long as they finally picked up a station.
“. . . Foxy with the top forty countdown. Before we interview the people at the number one spot, we’ll have a run down from ten to two”
Starr sat forward and listened to all the British music she was going to have to get used to. The only decent sounding band was one she already knew, the number one group, a boy band called a1. She tapped her foot along with the music, and her dad stopped the car halfway through the song, turning off the radio in the process. DUMB DAD’S!!!

            “We’re here!” he grinned.

            “A service station?”
“No, our new home, it sure is big!”
They looked at the giant house that loomed in front of them. Starr knew she’d be needed to help unpack, so before her parents could make the suggestion she blurted out
            “I’m going exploring!”
“Okay dear. There’s a fence around the property, so if you’re looking around outside you don’t have to worry about going too far or anything” her mum smiled. She climbed out of the car, and made her way over to the stile beside the house.

She took her time walking around the grounds, desperate not to have to unpack anything that wasn’t hers. After a good hour of wondering through the fields they now owned, she found a small bubbling stream. At first she saw nothing particularly interesting about this stream, albeit gorgeous, and typical of woodland streams in fairy tales, a small winding path of water through fields and woods, littered with small pebbles. Something, or some things, caught her eye before she completely looked away, and she leaned in for a closer inspection of the yellow, green and blue-y-purple lights she had noticed. Peering close enough, she saw that the lights actually belonged to three fairies.

“Please Ben, don’t get stressed, you know what happens if you do”

“I know Paul” the blue-y-purple fair snapped at the green one “But I can’t help it when I think of what those goblins have done”
“Shhh, Ben, human” the squeaky voice of the green fairy said. They all turned and stared hard at Starr, who was gaping back form shock. The green fairy fluttered up near Starr’s face and adopted a sitting-in-thought position.
“Can you hear us, human? Or even see us?” It squeaked. Starr studied it, and smiled. It looked just like Paul in a1.
            “Yes, I can do both”
The yellow fairy fluttered up then.
            “Paul, do you think . . .”
“It’s hard to tell Christian. I don’t think so, but my intuition disagrees”
“You fairies are confusing” Starr giggled.
            “She knows we’re fairies Paul!”
“I know Christian, I heard. I know almost everything remember? The bonus of being a green rainbow fairy”
The blue-purple fairy joined them then.
“Oh, sure Paul, rub it in that you know your colour”
“Ben, you know that you’re BLUE. Look, can we stop this? My intuition is getting strong”

The green fairy stopped arguing with the other fairies and turned back to Starr.
            “Human? What is your name?”
            “Starr”
The green fairy muttered something to himself, which only the other fairies could hear.
            “What are your names?”
“Sorry? Oh, I’m Paul, the yellow rainbow fairy is Christian, and the blue rainbow fairy is Ben”
“Part time blue, sometimes the red in me comes out-”
“BEN!” Paul cut off warningly. “Starr, how did you get here? To this place? The owner won’t be happy that you’ve trespassed”
“Oh, no, my parents own this house now. We moved here from America. Why?”
“Prophesy” Christian squeaked, looking pleased with himself. One look from Paul changed that,
            “Prophesy?”
“It’s no matter, not for you anyway. If you were our height . . .” he stopped mid-sentence, then did a somersault in the air. “It could be a matter for you! Starr, will you allow us to shrink you, so you can help us?”
            “Help? Help with what?”
            “Agree then we’ll tell you”
            “Tell me then I’ll agree”
            “Typical human!”
“Sorry Paul, but I’d really like to know what I’m agreeing to”
“In truth, there are parts I don’t know yet”
“Starr, we want you to save all the fairies” Christian blurted out.
“Oh, nice going Chris!” Ben cried.
“Sorry! It’s not my fault I’m truthful, King Mark made me this way, don’t blame me!”
“Save the fairies? You mentioned goblins earlier, are they to do with it?” Starr interrupted Ben and Christian’s argument.

“Yes, and that’s more than someone your height can know” Paul replied. He took Ben’s hand in one of his own, and Christian’s in the other. Then, still hovering, they started harmonizing, and Starr felt a strange sensation, strange and as eerily beautiful as the sound the three fairies were now making. As the song progressed, everything in her vision but the three of them seemed to grow, and she could feel herself shrinking. Time began to lose all meaning, and new noises and sights became present to her. The song finished, and the three fairies descended to talk to Starr.
“She’s not so big, Paul” Christian smiled. Starr smiled back shyly.
“Now I’m this size, can I please know what’s going on?”
The three fairies exchanged a look, and beckoned for Starr to sit, while Paul fluttered above them.
“We, as you already know, are three rainbow fairies. For some reason, being rainbow fairies is special enough, but we grew up with our King, so when he became king he gave us added responsibilities. Anyway, the King I speak of is King Mark, a silver fairy. King Mark’s done wonderful things in fairy valley and beyond. Some goblins heard how great King Mark is, and decided to punish him for not including him (something which he had overlooked, I’m sure), by kidnapping him. They don’t understand the depth of the damage they’ve caused though. Without King Mark, kids won’t believe in fairies, and without that belief we die. Without him influencing our lives, our powers are weaker too. Starr, you have to help the three of us rescue King Mark before life as fairies and humans know it is destroyed!!!”
