Ukrainian People Today, ethnic Ukrainians comprise approximately 73 percent of an estimated total population of more than 49.8 million. Ethnic Russians make up about 22 percent of the population; Romanians, Poles, Hungarians and other ethnic groups comprise the remainder. In keeping with this ethnic composition, Ukrainian, Russian, Romanian, Polish, and Hungarian are spoken. In terms of religious affiliation, there are Ukrainian Orthodox affiliated with the Moscow Patriarchate, and Ukrainian Orthodox affiliated with the Kyiv Patriarchate. There are also Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox, Ukrainian Catholics, Protestants, and Jews. Ukrainians have an average life expectancy at birth of 65.91 years (60.23 years for males, 71.87 years for females). The infant mortality rate is 21.73 deaths per 1,000 live births. An estimated 98 percent of the total population, age 15 and older, can read and write (100 percent of males, 97 percent of females). Home |
