A Mystery Revealed

Origins of the name Aidan Thomas

The name Aidan is Irish (Gaelic) and means 'warmth of the home' or 'little fiery one'. From the Hebrew comes Thomas, which means 'twin' or 'devoted brother'.

We have often heard the name of a newborn child and wondered how the parents came up with that or said to ourselves, "What were they thinking when they thought of that?" If that's your reaction to Aidan Thomas we can understand; we're not used to it yet either!

We really struggled to find a meaningful name for our son. We wanted something that flowed well with the family name Orcutt but we also wanted a name that had a significant meaning. Delores had liked the name Aidan for awhile. Some books had the meaning of Aidan as warm but in one book, we found the meaning "warmth of the home". We felt that conveyed the close bond we feel as a family. Also, this baby was a very active child in the womb. Perhaps his fiery spirit is how God reassured Delores of his wellbeing throughout the pregnancy.

Thomas was chosen after we had considered the Scottish form Tevis. Although we knew we weren't having twins, we were touched by the additional meaning "devoted brother". We have prayed that Ian and Aidan will have a special bond as brothers.

Boy, am I tired of being poked, suctioned, jabbed, and prodded! That heat lamp sure is nice though. Yeah, my eyes are open, but they squirted so much goop in them everything looks like a Monet. Ahh, this is more like it. Would you please get that camera out of my face!
