"What had been empty space before was now a mass of swirling blue, as though the opening had become a window onto a stormy sky." You trip and fall through and...
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
You wake up to dry desert air under a hot noonday sun, short green grass tickling your nose, and nothing for miles, save a tendril of smoke in the distance.  Where are you?

Welcome to Arren

This is the land of the band of warrior women led by Illyria, the Unicorn Queen.  Among them are Nanine, Pelu, Myno, Dian, Kara, Zanara-Ki, Darian, and last, but certainly not least, Sheila, a girl from our own world, thrown into this strange land through an experimental portal.

News Update! The Secret of the Unicorn Queen is coming into print again! The first volume features books 1 and 2 (Swept Away and Sun Blind. Here's a picture of the cover:

Here's a part of a fanfic I was writing...
The Secret of the Unicorn Queen:  The Return

The Secret of the Unicorn Queen was a book series for girls printed in 1988-89.  There were six books produced:

book  #1 Swept Away, by Josepha Sherman
The first book in the series, Sheila falls through an experimental portal into another world, of unicorns, warrior women, and magic.  She learns to ride, shoot a bow, and sleep on the ground.  But there's more to worry about than rocks and insects--some of the unicorns have been captured by the evil ruler of Campora, Dynasian.  Sheila must ride with the warrior women and use her everyday "magic" to help them free the unicorns.

book  #2 Sun Blind, by Gwen Hansen
Never was able to find this book to read.  It's the only one I haven't read.  The warrior women band finds a strange man, but don't know if he's friend or foe.

Thanks, Sherry, for the pic!

book  #3 The Final Test, by Dory Perlman
Shelia and the warrior women are at it again trying to save the unicorns.  This time, Mardock, the evil magician and advisor to Dynasian, plans to execute the unicorns, and grind their horns into powder for his own use.  Sheila and Illyria get captured and thrown into a dark, dank, and dreary prison cell.  With the help of her men-turned-eagle friends, her professor friend Dr. Reit, and some sodapop, the day is saved and Sheila makes it home.

#4 Into the Dream, by Suzanne Weyn
Sheila returns to Arren, and is greeted with joy by all the warrior women, even the envious Dian.  But...the unicorns are in trouble (as usual).  They are getting sick and disappearing and Sheila and the band must try to save them.  Unfortunately, Mardock, who disappeared in the last book, has returned to stir up trouble.

#5 The Dark Gods, by Josepha Sherman
One of the funnier books, believe it or not.  The warrior women get invited to a far, strange land.  Can't remember exactly what happens, but Sheila gets lost in the maze of a huge city, finds her way to the palace, and once again saves the day.  I think this is the one where she and Mardock get thrown into the same prison cell, providing for some very humorous moments.

Update! This was sent in by a fellow fan. Thanks, Tasha!

Sheila and the other warriors join a royal procession through the Prince Laric's land. They have terrible dreams of terrible creatures that turn out to be caused by evil magic sources. The evil seems to be coming from the border of King Kumura's land. The king captures Queen Illyria and the warriors have to go after her. Shelia , Pelu , and Dian (an unlikely match) end up going in to the castle after Illyria. Dian and Pelu get caught and dissappear . Shelia (hiding in a dark corner) over hears King Kumura and MARDOCK fighting over a magic ruby that is supposedly holding the dark gods . Mardock dissapears and Kumura discovers Shelia . He asks her to join him in conquering the world , and when she turns him down she gets knocked out. When she wakes up she discovers that she is in a prison cell with MARDOCK, and neighboring them was Pelu and Dian. With some coaxing Mardock gets them all out of the cells. Shelia gets the magic ruby and in a chase drops it and crushes it. That let the gods out. They ended up not really even being dark gods but good gods that were trapped in the ruby. The gods return to their own world taking Kumura with them. That night prince Laric had a big feast in honor of the warriors. Darian made a toast to Shelia and told her she was one of the most brave and prettiest warriors he ever met (of coarse he likes her, that's ovious). Dian and Shelia end up being friends after fighting the whole time she has been in Arren. Shelia can't wait for the next adventure .

#6 Moonspell, by Gwen Hansen
This one seemed to deviate from the other books just a little.  It seems to have an older feel to it. Sheila and Darian get lost in the woods, where they find a large, elaborately decorated house, created by Mardock, except they don't know that.  Anyway, they escape.  Sheila is trying to make her way back home, while at the same time the warrior women have to guide the unicorns to a certain waterfall in order to renew themselves.
