Imperial County is the youngest of California’s fifty-eight counties. In 1907 San Diego County extended from the Pacific ocean, on the west, to the Colorado River, Arizona border on the east, with Mexico being its southern border. By a vote of the people the county was divided in half, and the eastern portion became Imperial County.

Imperial County encompasses a 4,500 square mile area in the southeast corner of California. The area includes over 400,000 acres of irrigated farmland that is among the most productive agricultural regions in the world.

Imperial County is also the winter home of the United States Navy Blue Angels, the Glamis Sand Dunes, the Imperial Valley Mid-Winter Fair and Fiesta, the Holtville Carrot Carnival, and Brawley's Cattle Call Rodeo.

Imperial County  has seven incorporated cities; the county seat of El Centro , Brawley, Calexico, Imperial, Holtville, Calipatria and Westmorland.

Imperial County is located on the international border with Mexico and has three international ports of entry. There are two ports of entry located in Calexico, and the third port is at Andrade in eastern Imperial County.  Through these three ports travel over 35 million people and over 250,000 cargo trucks each year.

Ensuring public safety in this vast and diverse area requires highly trained and dedicated law enforcement professionals. The Imperial County Sheriff's Department is today a professional, forward thinking law enforcement agency that is continuing in the tradition established by the County’s first Sheriff Mobley Meadows.

“We are proud to serve the people of Imperial County, and to wear the badge of the Imperial County Sheriff's Department.”
Harold D. Carter, Sheriff
