          Recent Advances in the Statistical Methods for Bio Sciences

 

Tuberculosis Research Centre (ICMR), Chennai is hosting the IX Biennial Conference of International Biometric Society (Indian Region) from November 15 - 17th, 2007. This conference aims to provide an opportunity for all members of the society and others including students, teachers and professional statisticians alike to present their research findings, participate and interact during the technical sessions. The conference is preceded by a workshop on  November 14, 2007.

Theme :  “Recent Advances in the Statistical Methods for Bio Sciences”

Research Papers are invited for oral and posters presentation related to the above topic with applications, especially in the fields of ;

5. Ecology and Environment
6. Medicine and Public health among others

 

All the delegates participating in the conference /workshop are required to register.

The filled in registration form, along with the paper presentation details and registration fee should be sent to the organizing secretary by October 10,  2007.

Abstract Submission :

The abstract of papers must be sent to ibsindia2007@yahoo.co.in as an attachment or in a CD with presenters name as the file name. The registration form and demand draft should be sent to the Organizing Secretary, Department of Statistics, Tuberculosis Research Centre, ICMR, Chetpet, Chennai-600 031, so as to reach him on or before  September 30, 2007.  Abstracts will be refereed by the Technical Committee and acceptance of the paper as a presentation or poster will be communicated back to the participant with in 3 days. Full text of the paper (MS Word) must be sent by October, 2007. The abstracts and the full papers must be in the following format: The abstract should contain the title of the paper, name of author(s) and their affiliation on the top, followed by objective(s) of the study, methodology, results and conclusions. It should not exceed 300 words and should fit into 10 x 16cm box (Font size: 12, Font type: Times New Roman, Software: MS Word). The presenting author’s name should be underlined. Focus area of the study should also be specified.

Pre-conference Workshop :

 Keeping in view the broad theme of the conference, it is proposed to have one day pre-conference workshop on the topics of present day interest. The workshop will be on “Statistical Methods for Bioinformatics”. The speakers in the workshops will be well known professionals in the respective fields both from India and abroad.

Pre-conference Workshop Registration Fees: Rs750/- (includes course material, tea and lunch)

IBS(IR) Awards

The International Biometric Society (Indian Region) has instituted two Young Biometrician awards from the year 2005 with a view to draw /attract the talented young Statisticians and initiating them to the field of Biometrics. They will be supported by the IBS (IR) towards membership fee for the first two years with the hope that they will continue to actively participate and build up the Organization thereafter. The awards carry a two year subscription for the membership of the International Biometric Society and a certificate. The subscription for the membership shall be from the subsequent year of the award. The conditions of the award and the manner in which nominations to be made are as below:

  1. The Biennial awards instituted will be given to a person who is generally working in India and is less than 35 years of age as on 30th June of the year of award.
  2. Two prizes are proposed to be awarded for the best research work carried out in India for the published articles as well as accepted thesis which should include the applications of statistics in any branch of Biological sciences.
  3. The first prize is known as Prof. Girja Kanth Shukla - IBS (IR) Young Biometrician award given to candidates with Doctorate degree for the published /accepted thesis work in Statistics with potential applications in biological sciences.
  4. The second prize is known the IBS (IR) Young Biometrician award given to a candidate pursuing research work leading to Doctorate degree in statistics with potential applications in biological sciences.
  5. The prizes will be awarded at the time of the regional biennial conference of the IBS (Indian region).
  6. The applicants short listed for the awards shall present their results at the time of the conference.
  7. The applications will be considered on the basis of submission of full papers through proper channel or nominations/with recommendations from the guide/Head of the Department of the University/Institution.
  8. The candidate to be considered for the award shall be a single author or the first author only.
  9. A certificate to the effect that the work carried out in India is a bonafide original research work of the candidate along with the proof of age shall be submitted along with the paper.
  10. The selection of the award will be made by a panel of experts in the subject constituted for the purpose.
  11.  If no candidate is found suitable, awards will not be made for the period. The awardees shall continue the membership of the International Biometric Society (Indian Region) on their own, from the third year onwards, participate   and support the activities of the Society in India.

Accommodation and Travel

Information about accommodation in Chennai and travel to and from Chennai can be obtained from the Organizing Secretary/Accommodation Committee.  Closer to the date of the conference the Hospitality and Reception Committee will provide details related to hotels and travel agents based in Chennai. Those who need hotel accommodation are requested to send one day rent as advance to book the rooms in the hotels of their choice.
