THE LUCK FAMILY

The earliest Luck family we are aware of are William (abt 1699----) and Susanah who lived in Kent England. Their descendents went to Albany New York in 1803.
They and the Partridge families came to Oro Township from the U.S. in 1819 and 1820. They settled on neighboring properties on the Penetangueshene Road.
It would appear that they left Albany due to the anti British sentiment.

William Luck (abt. 1699---) and Susanah (last name unknown)

Their children were;

William (1724\25-----) Kent Englamd
Susanah (1727-----) Kent England
Ann (1730---) Kent England
Thomas (1735---) Kent England. He married Ann (last name unknown).

Thomas Luck and Ann

Their children were;

Edward (1758-1834). He is referred to as Edward 1st.
Anne (1760----) We have no more information about her

Edward 1st married Anne (1769----)who was born in Northampton.
Edward 1st then married Martha (1778-1850).
She was born in Albany New York.
In some records, (Dr Luck) it is shown as William and Anne being children of a first wife, and, as they were born in Northampton England and Martha was born in Albany, this would then make sense.
Edward 2nd is shown as being born in Albany, son of Martha.
Another record shows the first wife as being Anne (above) but does not show her as having children.
This record shows William (1797---) as born in England, and Anne (1799---) as being born in Albany.
This record may be incorrect, as Edward 1st came to Albany in 1803. This record shows Edward 1st and Martha as being married in Albany in 1804. It also shows Edward 2nd as being born in Albany in 1806. Therefore, I conclude that William and Anne are children of the first marriage, and Edward 2nd being the child of the second marriage. There is a single reference to a Mary as being a child of Edward 1st and Martha This person may not have existed.

William Luck, and Jemima Partridge were married prior to coming to Canada.
Anne Luck and Charles Partridge were also married prior to coming to Canada.
Edward 2nd who was born in Albany New York and Jane Caller (who was born in Scotland)were married in 1832.
Jemima and Charles Partridge were brother and sister.
They were the children of John Partridge (1727-1828) and Charlotte Oliver (1765-1852).
Descendents of the Luck and Partridge families still live in the same area today.

The following are the people we have information about. If someone is not mentioned, we are either not aware of them, or they may be living.

Jane Elpinstone (Caller) Luck's Obituary

CROWN HILL

One by one the are p---lag away the pioneers, who saw the landscape clad with virgin forest transformed into the magifiecent farm lands that lie along the Penetangueshene Road.
Another joined the silent majority on the 7th inst. in the person of Mrs. Jane Elphinstone, relic of the late Edward Luck. Death was due to old age, she being in her 88th year.
Her parents were in the employ of Lord Elphinstone, an english nobleman, and when travelling with them in Scotland, their daughter Jane Elphinstone was born. the first few years of her life were spent at Graveshead and while still young she came to Canada with her parents. Thier ship was wrecked off Newfoundland and with great difficulty the passangers were rescued saving only the clothes they wore. After a short residence in Toronto she moved to Crown Hill were she met and married Edward Luck in 1832. The rest of her days were spent on her homestead, lot 36 con. 1, Oro. Her husband was a fine speciman of the self made man. With opportunities that were of the scantiest he aquired a degree of scholarship that enabled him to win second place in the county competition for greatest proficiency in secular education. At the examination, it is interesting to note, Hon, Senator Gowen was one of the examiners. For twenty-two years Mr. Luck was the schoolmaster at Crown Hill and Hon. Charles Drury may be mentioned as one of men who received their education from him.He died in 18--. After his death, his widow resided with her two unmarried daughters on the same lot. Of a family of sixteen all survived her except one daughter who was drowned in childhood. The family are: William, Holland Landing; Edward, Crown Hill; Samual, Brechin; Thomas, Crown Hill; Charles, Barrie; Joseph, Crown Hill; Henry, Desoronto; Horatio W., Brantford; Mrs. John Jory, Dalston; Mrs. James Smith, Norwich; Mrs Thomas Drury, Barrie; Mrs Jos. Caldwell, Mrs Alfred Caldwell, Miss Emily and Margaret Luck, Crown Hill. The decendents also include 81 grandchildren and 47 great grandchildren. Her mother who died thirteen years ago lacked only three month of the century.
Internment took place in Dalston Methodist cemetary on Sunday the 9th inst. and notwithstanding the almost impossible roads, was very largely attended. All of the family except Charles, Henry, and Mrs. Smith were present. The pallbearers were six sons, William, Edward, Samual, Thomas, Joseph, and Horatio. The pulpit of the church was draped in black and numerous floral tributes were noticed. The service was conducted by Rev. E. T. Douglas who preached a very impressive sermon dwelling chiefly on the place and power of women in the world-and especially of such a woman as the splendid record of her long life showed Mrs. Luck to have been.
