Ian Boardman, PhD

Welcome to my home page. I work as a software engineer and applied scientist. My focus in recent years has been in technologies related to natural language processing (NLP), such as automatic speech recognition (ASR) using HMMs and neural networks. For my most recent employer, Nuance, I was training acoustic models and evaluating on-line adaptation techniques for automated voicemail transcription; and prior to that, I developed data resources supporting R&D of automated medical transcription. Prior to this, I worked for the Information Systems Technology Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington, Mass., on government sponsored research in areas such as speaker and language identification, and confidence scoring for automated speech recognition. I have also developed products as an early employee at start-up companies. iPhrase Technologies pioneered commercial applications of natural language based information retrieval and was acquired by IBM in 2005. PureSpeech pioneered business applications of natural speech recognition over the telephone and became part of Philips Electronics in 1998. I also was the lead on a project developing web services for electronic medical records (EMR) in the Radiology department of the Brigham and Women's Hospital. Please see my resumé for further details on my career.

I am an alumnus of the first class of the Dept. of Cognitive and Neural Systems at Boston University. My doctoral dissertation, "Neural Network Models of Temporal Processing in Speech Perception and Motor Control," was supervised by Professors Michael Cohen and Daniel Bullock and founding chairman, Professor Stephen Grossberg. See links to my scientific publications.
