ABSTRACT

Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, the cause agent of anthracnose on bean is characterized with considerable pathogen variability in its populations. Infected seeds are the main means of pathogen spreading over large distances. The use of seeds with unknown origin presents a real danger of introducing and distributing new more virulent strains and races of seed-borne bacteria and fungal pathogens on bean. This publication gives data on the effect of this process on pathogen variability of bean anthracnose in Bulgaria. The investigation included 18 monospore cultures of C. lindemuthianum isolated from plant and seed samples collected from mass crops and from the commercial distribution network in Bulgaria. The isolates virulence was determined on the basis of the response of 12 bean varieties included in a standard differentiation set. The results from the study showed that the investigated isolates were grouped in five races: 3, 6, 23, 73 and 79. Race 6 is typical for the regions of the West Rhodopi and Rila mountains. This race was identified in the region of South Dobroudja, as well. Races 73 and 79 were isolated in seeds imported from Ukraine. The origin of race 23 was not determined, but the seeds from which it was isolated were presumably imported.
