  • Allegory of the Cave by Plato

The story Allegory of the Cave pictures us the men who live in the cave, tightened by the chain so they cannot move.

The inside of the cave is dark and the men who stand there can only see their shadows in front of them, which are reflexed by the light behind them. Then, of all men there, one is given a chance to leave the dark walls of the cave to see the outside world with light and sun. While adjusting to the light blinding him the man suffers. But later on in the story we find out that he gets used to the light. Now he is able to see everything in outside real world. And everything he sees is new and exciting to him.

He suffers even more though when he gets back into the cave. Now he suffers adjusting to the dark. He cannot see anything he is blind. And all the men surrounding him think that the outside world has changed him to the worse, now that his vision is bad and he cannot see.

  • Message to the grass roots by MalcolmX

MalcolmX in this story talks about the Negro Revolution. He says: “Every revolution involves people bleeding. The black man can bleed when the white man tells him to bleed to protect US. Why cannot a black man bleed when his churches are being bombed and his children are killed?” This is the main issue in the story – the rights of the black man. Then MalcolmX compares nowadays black men with the black men when they were slaves.

The house Negro always agrees with his white master. He does everything what the white man tells him to do.

On the other hand, the field Negro is the one that hates white men. He wants to be free and independent. MalcolmX encourages “Grass Roots” to consider this and provokes for the black evolution.

  • The Lesson by Toni Cade Bambara

The storyteller is an early-teenage girl from a poor family, who one day was taught a lesson from her Grandma. The girl with her friends and her grandma go to the city one day to look at the windows of the toys store. All of the toys they saw were very expensive (Sailboat toy was $1095) and grandma wanted the kids to imagine what kind of rich people must have shopped here to buy presents for their children. She wanted them to know the difference between them and the rich people. While all silent, one of the girls states that the democracy of the country is not right. While this girl learned the lesson, our main character girl hesitated to even think of this. Maybe she was happy with the way she lived her poor life, or maybe she was so pissed that she cannot afford those toys. Who knows?
