what?

this site is a portfolio. it is a collection of the artwork that i've done over the past few years, and will contain the artwork that i do from now on.

the art

much of the art on this site fits into one of two categories; work i've done on my own time, and work that has comprised part of my studies. i studied foundation art last year, and am now studying graphic fine art BA.

most of it follows one of two themes; rock & roll, and the urban landscape of london. the two are quite polarised; the rock & roll artwork focuses very much on portraiture, movement and a feeling of one portraying the experience of one sense - sound - through another - vision. i love music photography; rich, colour-saturated, dramatic shots of people whirling around a stage, guitar gods in the making. much of this work is a few years old; consequently much of it feels quite immature to me now. some of the work focuses on the personalities behind the music - the human characters that produce it, and the energy they throw into their music; elsewhere i'm interested in form, the shapes that musicians form and become when in motion onstage, fused with their instruments.

most of the landscape work, meanwhile, is much more recent, and practically devoid of any human life; i am interested in the personification of the landscape rather than the people that occupy it; how buildings exist alongside each other, how they seem to take on a life of their own, and become almost organic, part of the nature of our city. i am particularly interested in the canary wharf complex - a highly compact, very new "silver city" that seems to have sprung up out of previously empty marshland in the matter of a few years.

media

much of my earlier work is painted in acrylics or created in chalk pastels, or most frequently sketched in pencil; more recently i've become very interested in digital photography. in the past couple of years i've explored illustrative methods using graphics pens and acetate layered over photography and simpler pen sketches.

using my work

i do not tolerate theft, ripping or plagiarism. each piece of work on this site took a bare minimum of two hours. the more detailed work took between two days and several weeks. therefore i am fairly protective of my work. i don't want it to crop up in random corners of the internet, altered/fucked about with to within an inch of its life, and i don't want to find it credited to other people. if you steal, copy, or use my work in any way without my express permission, i will pursue legal action.

however. if you wish to use my work in any capacity, please email me and let me know what context you wish to use it in. if you want to display it, i will more than likely agree, assuming it doesn't harm or degrade my work in any way. if you wish to edit it, please obtain permission from me first, and give me an idea of how you plan to edit it. i have found my work on other people's sites [usually fansites for whichever band my work had portrayed] uncredited, badly displayed and/or edited; i put a lot of time into making these images look exactly how i want them, so this makes me angry. please don't do it without getting permission first.
