Nevada Hiking and Related Outdoor Activities

Charleston Peak (Mount Charleston) : An alpine summit near Las Vegas (16 miles west of my house).

Cross-Country Skiing near Mount Charleston : Trail Canyon -- a greater vertical drop than at the official ski area!

Bridge Mountain : A spectacular sandstone peak in Red Rocks, west of Las Vegas.

Black Velvet Peak : Sharp peak west of Vegas, bounded by 2000' manganese-stained wall.

Mummy Mountain : Sub-alpine peak near Charleston Peak; a challenging day hike (no real trail).

Turtlehead Peak : This Red Rocks-area peak is visible from much of Vegas (5 miles west of my house).

Wheeler Peak (two mountains, Nevada and New Mexico) : Great Basin National Park, Nevada; and Taos, New Mexico.

South Sister (two mountains, Nevada and Oregon) : NW of Vegas, and W of Bend.

Calico Tanks : A pond on top of a desert mountain in Red Rocks, near Las Vegas.

Madre Peak : The highest mountain near Red Rocks, from north and south routes (class II to III).

Gunsight Peak: A class-III hike to a "small" summit in Red Rocks (2200' elevation gain, in shadow of Rainbow Wall).

Summerlin Peak: A surprisingly tough little hike, 2100' elevation gain, very close to town.

Calico Basin: Another hike very close to town, through a pretty ravine -- with one tight spot.

Oak Creek, Icebox Canyon, Juniper Canyon: Typical Red Rocks "canyon" hikes.

Mount Whitney (California) : A 22-mile day hike with ~7000' elevation gain. You don't have to be in top shape; you just have to be slightly deranged.

Grand Canyon: "rim-to-rim" in one day. Beat the heat before it beats you.

Quandary Peak in Colorado -- an easy hike… when it's not snowing. My nephew's wedding.
