Four yerars later, Rick Hunter is the Lieutennant of the LAPD Metro Division! On Valentine's Day, he takes his girlfriend Vicki to a fancy restaurant for a special diner where they exchange their gifts. Vicki gives Hunter a beautiful watch with the inscription "My love forever, Vicki" on the back. While it is a very beautiful gift, Hunter's is something more. He holds out an engagement ring, proposes marriage and she happily accepts.
The next night is Captain Devane's retirement party. Hunter is unaware that while he's at the party, Vicki's ex husband shows up drunk, wanting her back. The man leaves and she calls Hunter on his cell phone. When he arrives at her house, he finds her dead on her living room floor. Convinced that it was Vicki's ex husband who murdered her, Hunter begs Charlie to give him the case, but since they had been engaged, it would be against departmental policy for him to take the case, so Charlie can't put him on it.
The strong friendship Hunter and Charlie always had proved even stronger as Charlie Devane came out of retirement so he could help catch the killer of Hunter's fiance. Turns out it was not her ex husband at allm, but rather, a man who had worked out at the same gym as Vicki and who had killed two other women there. Ther man harasses Hunter fo rthe simple fact that he wanted a spot on the TV show COPS. He confesses, Hunter lures him to an empty gymnasuim to arrest him and the man is killed in a scuffle with Hunter.
The movie concludes with Hunter going through his nail at home and spotting a letter from Vicki. He walks out onto his balcony and reads it while his eyes fill up with tears he tries his hardest to hold back. It was a letter she had written to him thanking him for the engagement ring and again saying "yes" to his proposal.
