On January 12, 1947, 22-year-old Elizabeth Short, dubbed "The Black Dahlia", was mysteriously murdered in an unthinkable way. The Black Dahlia case is the most famous case in the history of the Los Angeles Police Department and to this day, remains open and unsolved. On January 12, 1988, on the 41st anniversary of the murder, HUNTER's 78th episode, entitled "The Black Dahlia", was an episode based on this infamous case.
An old building is demolished for a new one to be built in its place. While tearing up the building's foundation, a contractor discovers a skeleton cut in half at the waist, the same way the Black Dahlia was 41 years earlier. They don't think much of it at first, but when it is discovered that the building's foundation was laid the same year of the Black Dahlia murder, the investigation starts again. Hunter and McCall are next in line to investigate this case and are joined by Detective John Doyle. Detective Doyle was a retired cop who had the Black Dahlia case for 15 years, before retiring. When he heard the case was being worked on again, he went to Hunter and McCall, showing interest in the case and telling them of his experiences with it and joins the duo in their investigation.
