All the Winners!

Hume City Council honoured citizens who have made an outstanding contribution to the Hume community at an Australia Day awards ceremony in the Broadmeadows Town Hall this Sunday 26 January.

Hume Mayor, Cr Ann Potter, presented the awards for Hume Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year.

The Hume Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year awards recognise residents who have made an outstanding contribution or worked to benefit the local community over a number of years. The Hume Community Event of the Year award recognises the most notable community event staged in the past 12 months.

This year's award winners are:
Hume Citizen of the Year Veronica Burgess, Sunbury
Hume Young Citizen of the Year Ben Stanford, Sunbury
Hume Community Event of the Year Australian Turkish Day celebrations

Hume Mayor, Cr Potter said the award recipients were deserved winners. "They have shown
themselves to be active and supportive members of the local community, ready to lend a
helping hand wherever possible. The awards are recognition for their contribution to the Hume
community and the community's way of saying 'thank you'."

Hume Citizen of the Year Veronica Burgess has been a longstanding, and outstanding member
of the Sunbury and Hume community. Ms Burgess has contributed her time and efforts to a
number of worthwhile community events, organisations and community initiatives, including:
19 years as member of the Sunbury Lawn tennis Association, including seven years as tournament coordinator at the Sunbury junior tennis tournament
Volunteer collector for both the Red Cross and Salvation Army
Life member of the Sunbury Amateur Swimming Club
President of the Sunbury and District Heritage Association
Foundation member of the Friends of Evans Street grassland
Member of the Hume Weeds Advisory Committee
Member of Hume Environmental Sustainability Framework Taskforce
Foundation member of the Mount Holden Preservation Society and Sunbury Conservation Society.

Hume Young Citizen of the Year Ben Stanford has shown himself to be a conscientious young man, ready to lend a helping hand. This can be seen through his involvement in projects like the Sunbury Street Surfer bus project, of which he was a volunteer from day one, and in his role as a member of both the Sunbury SES and local Baptist Church Youth group.

Australian Turkish Day celebrations were a worthy winner of the Community Event of the Year, with the 2002 event, held at Broadmeadows Town Park, attracting more thane 10,000 people. Australian Turkish Day celebrates Turkish migration, with Hume, home to a large Turkish community, playing host for the third successive year.
