The year of the dog arrives with some good news.

This year, I'm turning 25--a quarter of a century, and I thought I'd also be a quarter of a million richer. Thanks to the government that gives the NCCA grant, I just lost PhP 50,000.00 to the 20% tax it imposed on its own awards. Nonetheless, this grant has a very good timing: my faculty housing application was approved last January 31 (and I need the money for loan equity or whatevery-they-call-it), and if things went smoothly, I might just have my own house built before the year ends.

A week ago, I received an e-mail (Nikka informed me about this prior to the letter) from La Salle
's Malate. They asked me to judge the short story in Filipino category for their LitAw '06, and despite the number  of students papers I have to read, I gladly accepted the invitation. Roland Tolentino will be my co-judge.

Malugod po kayong inaanyayahang makinig sa darating na Linggo, ika-5 ng Pebrero 2006, ika-8 hanggang ika-9 ng gabi, para sa unang
pagsasahimpapawid ng palatuntunang "Harana ng Puso kasama ang Mabuhay Singers" sa DWBR 104.3 FM. Gaya ng isinasaad ng pamagat, kinatatampukan ang palatuntunang ito ng pangkatan at isahang pag-awit ng mga katutubo, tradisyonal, at istandard na awitin sa iba't ibang pangunahing wika sa Filipinas--Tagalog, Ilokano, Bikolano, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Kapampangan,at iba pa.

Ang tampok na pangkat ng mga mang-aawit, ang Mabuhay Singers, ay kasalukuyang binubuo ng mga beterano at maalamat na tinig sa musikang Filipino, na pinangungunahan ni Cely Bautista (na nagpatanyag ng mga kantang "Hinahanap Kita" at "Irog Ako ay Mahalin" noong dekada 50 pati na ang "Walang Kapantay" noong dekada 70), Carmen Camacho (na nagpatanyag ng mga kantang "Magtitiis Ako" at "Sariling Kaligtasan"), Raye Lucero (na nagsaplaka ng mga awiting Ilokano), Peping De Leon (na kampeon ng Hamon sa Kampeon noong dekada 60), Eddie Suarez (na batikang gitarista ng mga mang-aawit na tulad nina Diomedes Maturan at Ric Manrique Jr.), at Marlon Marifosque. Itinatag ang pangkat noong 1958 ng may-ari ng Villar Records Corporation na si Manuel P. Villar Sr. para magsaplaka ng mga tradisyonal, klasika, at iba pang katutubong awiting Filipino. Mula 1958 hanggang 1978, nakabuo ang pangkat ng may 300 long playing album, na ang marami sa ngayon ay nailipat na sa CD at ipinamamahagi ng Aquarius Records at Alpha Records.

Ang host at pangkalahatang tagapamahala ng palatuntunan ay si Michael M. Coroza, isang premyadong makata, kinikilalang mambabalagtas, at guro ng wika, panitikan, malikhaing pagsulat, at pagsasalin sa Kagawaran ng Filipino ng Paaralan ng Humanidades ng Pamantasang Ateneo De Manila. Bahagi ng kaniyang espesyalisasyon at pakikisangkot ang pagtataguyod ng mga tradisyonal, klasika, at iba pang katutubo/naisakatutubong awiting
Filipino na namulaklak sa panahon ng kolonyalismong Espanyol at
Amerikano.

YCC bares winners of film awards

THE Film Desk of the Young Critics Circle formally announces the winners of its annual film awards.
Masahista directed by Brillante Mendoza was named Best Film of the Year.

Produced by Gee Entertainment and Centerstage Productions, the dramatic tale of a young man working in a massage parlor catering to gay clients also captured all other top honors for the 16th Annual Circle Citations for Distinguished Achievement in Film for 2005 handed out by the country's main organization of academe-based critics.

Masahista is the lone nominee for and ultimate winner of the critics group’s top plum as well as other prizes for such categories as Best Editing and Best Sound and Aural Orchestration. For Best Screenplay, it won over an only other nominee, namely, Mac Alejandre’s  Let the Love Begin (GMA Network Films; Regal Entertainment). For Best Cinematography and Visual Design, it also bested an only other nominee—Toto Natividad’s Paraiso (World Arts Cinema). Lead actor Coco Martin garnered the Best Performance award beating co-star Jaclyn Jose, the entire cast of Cholo Laurel’s Nasaan Ka Man (Star
Cinema; ABS-CBN Film Productions) and John Lloyd Cruz in Rory Quintos’
Dubai (Star Cinema; ABS-CBN Film Productions).

YCC will pay tribute to its latest batch of honorees in ceremonies set for
March. Film year 2005 is particularly significant for YCC with
Masahista as the first film in YCC history to have a clean sweep of all the awards. It
also marks in years the leanest slate of films vying in various categories for YCC awards. The very few titles to pass the grade emerged from the total of 50 films plus the five digitals that had the benefit of full playdate and commercial theatrical run in 2005. For the succeeding years, YCC is seeking ways for other motion picture productions especially the digitals that may not have regular release to qualify for YCC honors.

Established in 1990, YCC is the critics group with members coming from various disciplines. Through the years, they have become attentive observers of Philippine cinema constantly bringing into the analysis of film an interdisciplinary approach.

The organization departs from many conventions of other award-giving bodies both here and abroad in bestowing cinematic honors. For instance, the award for Best Film of the Year is reserved for the director such that no separate prize for direction is needed. The Best Performance award is most coveted as it is conferred on a screen performer whether male or female, adult or child, individual or as part of an ensemble, in leading or supporting role. To uphold a more dynamic and holistic way of looking at films, technical honors refer to fusion of outstanding efforts in fields otherwise deemed apart. In this case, the Best Cinematography and Visual Design recognition covers both camerawork and art direction. Similarly, Best Sound and Aural
Orchestration encompasses not just sound engineering per se but musical score as well.

BE ONE OF THE 15 FELLOWS IN THE IYAS CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP WITH  MULTI-AWARDED WRITERS!

The Iyas Creative Writing Workshop is now accepting fellowship applicants for this year’s workshop, to be held April 25 to May 1, 2006, at Balay Kalinungan, University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City,  Negros Occidental.

Fifteen fellowships will be awarded by genre and language. Grants will cover board and lodging and a partial transportation subsidy. Deadline for applications is on March 31, 2006.

Interested parties may send two (2) short stories, six (6) poems, or two (2) short plays for consideration, signed with a pseudonym, along with a sealed business envelope containing the author’s real name and  pseudonym, a 2x2” ID photo, and a short resumè. Works must be submitted in five hard copies,  manuscript format (12 pt Times New Roman, letter-size paper), accompanied by a soft copy (MS Word format) on a diskette. Works may be in English, Filipino, Tagalog, Hiligaynon, or Cebuano.
