Last year you overwhelmingly decided that Sikeston should have its own City Charter. That Charter will become our governing document after the election this April 8th. As your candidate for mayor, I led the team that created your Charter, and I am the candidate who will give your Charter the chance it needs to try out its wings. We might be able to put history in a box, but don't let anyone put our Charter in a box - let's give it a chance to fly!

The background I bring to our city is very broad, with experience in diverse areas. After graduating with honors from Westminster College with a Bachelor's degree in mathematics, I received a Masters of Science degree in mathematics from Florida State University. A Viet Nam era veteran in the combat engineers, I first served as a platoon leader in Korea with I Corps during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Later assignments included being under special assignment to I Corps commander Lt. General Fisher. Upon returning from Korea I was assistant operations officer for the Strategic Army Command's 27th Engineer Battalion attached to the 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. I finished my military career there as the battalion adjutant.

A sales and marketing career with the IBM Corporation in St. Louis; Washington, DC; New York; and Atlanta brought involvement with many major corporations both in the United States and abroad. The experience and exposure gained from working with IBM was significant and not easily replicated. My last years in Atlanta I founded The Sharper System, a computer systems and management consulting firm.

Ten years ago my wife Anita and I returned to my home town of Sikeston where I immediately became involved in our community. I was a physics teacher for five years at Sikeston and Kelly High Schools. That overlapped with a calling to be the pastor of Smith Chapel United Methodist Church in Sunset for five years. I served as the Chair of the Sikeston Charter Commission, Past President Sikeston Area Ministerial Alliance, and the Sikeston Planning & Zoning Board for 6 years. A statewide position has me on the Board of Directors of the Missouri United Methodist Church. Other organizations and activities include the District Committee of the Boy Scouts of America, Weed & Seed, Bootheel Healthy Start, Sikeston Elks Lodge, American Legion, First United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Men, Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce, and Sikeston Community Chorus.

My son Woody brought his family here in 1994, and my three grandchildren attend Sikeston Public Schools. Anita's children, Tim and Karen Davis, have graduated from colleges in Georgia and live there now.

My parents are Ruth Felker Sharp and the late Garwood Sharp, both of whom were very involved in our community. My father helped plan for and build our current power plant after his retirement from the Chevrolet and radio businesses, something of which I am very proud.

There are many issues confronting our city that need to be brought into the light and addressed. They range from expanding a strong base of private sector jobs, addressing infrastructure improvements and flooding, an open and accessible government, to problems involving race and economic status.

My experience ranging from involvement in minority programs to executive leadership provides the background and trust needed to address these issues.
