After retiring from military service, the record finds its way to clickmeThe National Personnel Records Center.

The individual may ask to obtain his or her own record, or in the case of the deceased, the next of kin may request the aforementioned item.



The Timeline

If the retiree is an officer separated after 1902, or an enlisted separated after 1885, contact:

However, if the retiree separated from the Military before 1902 (officer), or 1885 (enlisted), they are asked to dial (202)501-5385 instead.

To get the whole process revved up, you must provide the Service Member's full name during the time of service. Other pertinent information:

  • Branch of Service
  • Social Security Number / Service Number
  • Place & date of birth
  • Service dates
  • Rank / Grade at separation
