Bluegrass: Contrary to what some people seem to think (and even to what some mis-informed Web pages will tell you), bluegrass music is not (repeat: NOT) folk music--not even "folk music in overdrive" as one writer said. Bluegrass music is the evolved invention of one man: the late William Smith (Bill) Monroe. Bill Monroe did not set out to develop a form of folk music. When Bill Monroe created the bluegrass sound (although it was not yet called bluegrass) in the late 1930's, he intended to create a commercially successful sound--in much the same way as (but with far more artistic success than) Buck Owens did a quarter of a century later. That Monroe's style of music has been adopted by many thousands of musicians around the world is a tribute to Monroe's genius, but it does not make his invention folk music.

Western Swing   developed in Texas and Oklahoma in the 1930's and gained tremendous popularity in the 40's. The style is a blend of big band Swing, country music, blues, dixieland, and jazz among other forms. Western Swing introduced the drums and steel guitar to country music. Sometimes called "Texas Swing", it was a Saturday night dance type of music which combined the style of big band swing with country music and the culture of the southwestern United States.
Bob Wills was known as the "King of Western Swing". Wills perfected his style in the late 30's with his band the "Texas Playboys." His most popular songs include "San Antonio Rose", "Faded Love", "Stay All Night", and "Take Me Back to Tulsa." Other major Western Swing bandleaders include Milton Brown, Hank Thompson, and Spade Cooley, among others. The best known individual musicians were members of Bob Wills's Texas Playboys--for example, fiddler Johnny Gimble, guitarist Eldon Shamblin, & vocalist Tommy Duncan. As Waylon Jennings (if you don't listen to commercial country music, you can think of him as Buddy Holly's bass player) sang many years later:    It don't matter who's in Nashville, Bob Wills is still the King.
