Hurley and the surrounding area is filled with diverse wildlife. Some common species are whitetail deer, beaver, black bear, moose, elk, and fisher. Bird species include merlin, trumpeter swan, sandhill crane, eagles, osprey, and loons. There are more than 30 pair of osprey and bald eagles nesting in Iron County, and more than 50 pair of loons.

Once again timber wolves can be seen and heard in the Iron County area. Abundant deer and beaver populations, along with vast roadless forests have proven favorable to reestablishing wolves.
The Common Loon thrives in Iron County's many lakes. In fact, nearby Mercer, WI has been declared the "loon capital of the world" (see below)
The world's largest loon in Mercer, WI stands at 16ft and weighs approximately 2000 lbs.
BLACK BEAR
There are more black bear in Iron County than in anywhere else in Wisconsin. They are the largest omnivore and one of the largest native animals you will see in the Northwoods. The Wisconsin black bear population in 2002 was estimated at 13,000 animals (WDNR).

Because of thier abundance, Iron County Judge Patrick Madden initiated the implementation of "bear crossing" signs along local highways. Sadly, every one of these signs was stolen within three months.
