The black fish from Xingu is a mistery even for ichthyologists. There is a good chance that it could be a new species. But more studies are needed to confirm that. Ichthyologists are collecting more specimens from the 'black' hoplias species to see if it is indeed a new species. Plus, as malabaricus is poorly know in terms of its taxonomy, the black species could be more related to malabaricus. We will update this summary when the study is completed and its findings.
